5 of the Biggest Trends for Summer 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Every season, new trends work their way into our wardrobes. Sometimes, we find ourselves wearing pieces that we never expected to come back into style, like high-waisted pants and crop tops. This summer will be no different. Here are five of the biggest trends to look out for this summer.

1. The “pretty-ugly” sandal: Yes people, Birkenstock sandals are actually back in style. I never thought this day would come, or else I wouldn’t have tossed my pair from 2006. From Alexander Wang to Miu Miu, chunky sandals are taking fashionable feet by storm.

2. Overalls: I’m not quite sure how I feel about this trend yet, or maybe it’s just that I’m not sure if I can pull it off. Either way, overalls have moved from farms to runways and these pairs come in several materials, styles, and patterns.

3. Bralettes: I sadly cannot sport this trend, but I’m jealous of every girl who can. These delicate, lacy undergarments are perfect under a loose tank top, a swing dress, or even overalls like the pair shown above.

4. Loose trousers: On a hot summer day, light and flowy pants are the perfect way to overcome the heat without sacrificing a trendy, tasteful look. These pants are the ideal day-to-night or work-to-play transition piece that can be worn conservatively and professionally or as part of a chic ensemble for a night out.

5. Mirrored aviator sunglasses: These shades come in almost every color of the rainbow. This is a fun, new take on a classic shape, bringing back the aviator’s vitality.
