11 Things You Never Thought You’d Miss About WashU

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

11 Things You Never Thought You Would Miss About WashU

  1. Sharing a room

Trying to sleep in while your roommate got ready for her 8:00 am class wasn’t so fun.  But now that you’re alone, you miss talking to someone every night and morning.  This person went through it all with you, and at this point you know more random information about each other’s habits than anyone else in your life.

2.   Sharing a bathroom

Will your entire shower be blue today because your suitemate dyed her hair?!  Who knows, but that kind of suspense is exactly the type of excitement your life needs.

3.   Waiting for packages in the mailroom

“A Package for you has Arrived at the Counter!” – You know the excitement that this email brought after a long day.  Sure, it seemed like a chore while you were living on campus, but you’d give anything to take the extra long walk to Hitzeman, inevitably see a friend along the way, wait on the long line, and finally receive your Amazon package of sloth slippers and snacks like a beautiful gift in your hands.

4.   Never getting a booth at Whispers

You’ve just completed another year at WashU, but you’ve never once sat in a booth at Whispers Cafe.  The mysterious draw of these exclusive booths keeps you and your friends coming back to the Olin Library again and again, yet somehow you always end up at a regular table.  Maybe next year!

5.   The fact that Birds were banned from campus

Who will WUPD ticket today? This ban had people signing petitions and protesting with hilarious art forms on their windows and in public.  While the rule seemed like an annoyance, it brought the school together in the beginning of the year to rally against a common enemy.  Most importantly, it made it all the more thrilling to ride one on campus.  Look at you go, you badass!

6.   The BD Workers

The best way to start the day is when Ms. Edith tells you to “Keep on smiling, young lady!” as you pay for your daily avocado toast.  These kind people always wanted to chat with you, and if you were lucky they knew your regular order before you even said anything.  Thanks Sandra, Dorothy, and all of the staff for making BD feel like home.

7.   Walking past the Groups Tabling at the DUC

Four different student organizations shout at you to buy John’s Donuts from them as you try to walk into the DUC unnoticed.  Only 2 dollars?  And the money goes to charity?  Finally, you give in and Venmo some random frat-bro for a delicious treat.   You know you wanted one all along.

8.   Eating at Ibby’s

Cheesy gnocchi?  Juicy chicken?  Sangria?  Baked All Nighter? Fine dining atmosphere?  With meal points?!  With your friends?!  Unbeatable.

9.   Schnucks / Target / Trader Joe’s Runs

Grocery shopping just isn’t as fun unless you get to leave campus in a shifty Uber with your best friends and run around the store gathering snacks and food that you’ll forget in your fridge until it rots.

10.       Working in Olin Library

The tense quietness of the third floor makes you nervous, but you know the feeling of accomplishment you get when you’ve just spent 4 hours studying in Olin.

11.       Being with your friends all the time

Okay, this is an obvious one, but it’s the people that make WashU so amazing.  The best thing about living in the dorms is never having to go far to find someone who will make you laugh, study with you, or have a deep late night discussion.  All you have to do is follow the scent of microwave popcorn and listen for the sound of aggressive shouting and you’ve found your friends.  These people have seen you in pajamas frantically completing a paper that’s due at midnight.  They’re in the common room when you walk into your dorm every evening, ready to grab dinner or paint your nails.

They’re the reason why we are all so devastated that we get 8 less weeks at WashU than we were supposed to.  It sucks to be apart, but we can be thankful that we love our college friends so much that it’s incredibly difficult to say goodbye.
