The Top Lame Things We Do Every New School Year

A new school year always means change of some sort, especially with so many things up in the air  – new classes, new professors, new dormitories, new roommates maybe even a whole new university (How’s first week like, freshmen?) but there are some things that don’t change…The utterly pointless things we do (or y’know, buy) to “prepare” ourselves for the new school year’s resolutions we’ve vowed to keep true to awesome-fy our university lives! Don’t deny it, collegiettes! We’ve all been there and we won’t judge! :P

We…buy a crapload of pretty, pretty notebooks and stationery in general!

Let’s face it, we all have that one secret wish to be the awesome, efficient student who manages to balance all her commitments with awesome organizers and notebooks while managing to look stunning. You know, the girl we imagine ourselves to be, with the smart outfit and the preppy glasses, perfectly manicured fingers wrapped around the pen poised purposefully on top of her beautiful notebook, listening attentively to the professor’s difficult class about international politics? Yeah, that’s the one we all imagine ourselves to be for the new school year. And in preparation for that…we buy a lot of the equipment that girl owns – notebooks, diaries, organizers with the subway map at the back, pens and markers in about two hundred shades of the rainbow…only to end up never using it. In truth, it takes a lot of discipline (not to mention some kickass calligraphy style handwriting) to do such pretty stationery justice. You need to conscientiously fill it up and of course, conscientiously take notes in class instead of y’know, resorting to your Mac or dozing off in class. And for a significant portion of the collegiette population, it’s like…

We…plan our outfits and put on make-up

The first week of school is always a beautiful sight. With the end of summer comes sweater weather and everywhere on campuses collegiettes break out their best light trench coats, ankle boots and of course, all their best knitwear. Make-up, Pinterest hair and the works! And needless to say, by the end of the second week, barely anyone is still putting in the effort and by the start of finals, not going to school in sweatpants is an achievement unto itself.  Of course there are always exceptions, especially here in Japan where almost everyone is immaculately dressed but we can all relate to the diminishing interest in looking good as the stress builds up. As the age old saying goes, when the going gets tough, the tough gets…

We…attempt to pack our own lunches

We all want to be that busy collegiette who manages to stay healthy despite her hectic schedule by making her own awesome lunches packed neatly into too-cute bento boxes. We buy bento boxes and maybe even bring lunch to school…for a few days at most. Well, can you blame us? Waking up early to prepare food and cleaning up cooking equipment takes the toll out of the best of us so it’s no surprise that the lunch-making plan usually lasts less than a week!

In short…

We make a bunch of unrealistic plans! But hey, what’s life without some big (read: unattainable) goals to work towards?
