Food.

That got your attention, right? From everyday family meals to holiday feasts, and even the quick and little snack breaks during work – food defines the human experience. Everyone has a relationship with food, and it ultimately shapes our bodies, minds, communities, and the world we call home.

Yet, from weakened food security, wasteful management systems, and impoverished communities, food is a necessity that many cannot access.

This year, Waseda University is engaging itself in the Hult Prize Challenge of the Year: Food for Good.

So you may ask, what is Hult Prize? Founded in 2010 by Ahmad, the Hult Prize is an annual, year-long competition that unifies undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students to put their social and entrepreneurs skills to use so that they can find solutions towards a global issue. It has become the world’s largest student event platform for entrepreneurship – with a vast network of alumni, mentors, and guardians who share the same passion and desire to make a lasting impact in the world.

The past issues the Hult Prize has dedicated its attention to, mainly centered on social problems, such as food security (2013), children education (2010), refugee problem (2017), urban space problem (2016), and also natural resources fields such as the water crisis (2011), energy power (2018), and climate change (2020). This year, the Hult Prize returns to the roots of the human experience – food. What should entrepreneurs do to develop better and safe food for every individual? We must remember that while many of us have the privilege of living a life without the worries of food shortage, millions are still struggling for adequate food supply. Given so, Waseda Hult Prize is asking teams from around the world to build viable food enterprises that will impact the lives of ten million people in the next decade while strengthening communities, increasing incomes, creating jobs, and feeding the hungry.

The process of Hult Prize is divided into 3 main steps – which are on-campus, regional finals, and global finals. In order to participate in this year’s Waseda on Campus competition, you need a team of 3-4 members to come up with a 6-minute presentation to deliver to our honorable judges in the upcoming virtual On Campus event on November 29th. Previous Hult Prize winners have included people like Mohammed Ashour, co-founder, and CEO of the Aspire Food Group, or Kisum Chan & Lincoln Lee – Forbes 30 under 30 Founder of Rice Inc.

Joining Hult Prize would enable you to explore your creativity, unlock your entrepreneurial spirit, and boost your leadership capacity. You would have the opportunity to work and communicate with not only your team but also students around the world. By taking part in the Hult Prize, you would get job career mentorship, or a chance for an internship at social impact-led organizations, and connect to UN-related institutions around the globe. Additionally, the final winner will be presented at the Headquarter of the United Nations and win an award of US $1,000,000 to build their own business enterprise. Many past Hult Prize Winners have made great contributions to their country or to the world.

And so, Waseda Hult Prize invites you to share your innovative ideas and challenges you to make a team to compete in the competition held on November 29th, 2020.
