3 Great Places for Studying in Waseda (which are not the library or the study room!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waseda chapter.

As the semester steadily unfolds we begin gathering our study momentum to make sure we are not falling behind classes. (Well, not this early in the semester at least!) Libraries and study rooms are filling up with students highly motivated to keep up with their schedules. Sometimes however, we can all do with a little change of environment to spice up our study time and maximize our study potential!

Here are 3 alternative places in Waseda campus you can consider for a fresh study experience.

1. Okuma Garden

Autumn beckons and picnics are underway. In the upcoming few weeks of perfect sweater weather, spend some time at Okuma Garden with your readings! During lunch time, the garden is usually dotted with couples snatching a quick date in between classes. In the later afternoon, as the crowd disperses, the garden is an oasis for those looking for a refreshing study environment.

Do you know that nestled in the deeper part of the garden beyond the pond, there is a space with a few tables and benches where you can actually sit and read? The canopy above filters and makes gentle the sunlight which, together with the trees enveloping the space, creates a cosy space that reinvigorates any jaded soul. A definite recommendation for those who need to finish their readings with a clear mind!

2. School of Political Science and Economics (Building 3)

To our freshmen and those who have just returned from studying abroad – have you visited the newly renovated SPSE faculty building? If you haven’t, grab your books and make your maiden journey there. It has such great spots for studying!

First, there’s W Space:

Then, from the 6th level onwards, there are little pockets of spaces near the elevators which boast floor to ceiling views of Tokyo city. In fact, on clear days, Tokyo Skytree can be seen tall and erected in a distance from the windows! The spaces next to these windows have tables, chairs and benches installed for conducive studying.

3. PC rooms

It always surprises me how underrated the faculty PC rooms in Waseda are – they make such a conducive space for studying and research! Unlike the libraries where WiFi connection is intermittent and slow, or the central computer room in building 22 where it’s stuffy and warm, the PC rooms in Waseda’s faculty buildings (for instance, those on the 6th floor of building 11 offer seamless and quick connectivity on their computers, enabling efficiency especially for those who have research assignments on their plates.

What about you, where do you usually like to study in Waseda?
