There are quite a few factors that make Hamilton a great musical, from the talent of each of the cast members to the intricate nature of the music and dance numbers.

But, for a lot of people, Hamilton is a lot more than just a musical. It, like Black Panther and Black Lightning, is a production in which they can see themselves. Hamilton is a take on the story of Alexander Hamilton and the founding of America, which is told using rap and more modern means of musical theatre. That being said, the cast is very diverse mostly being black, biracial, or Hispanic. This has caused questions in the minds of some over the years because we all know that for the most part, the founding fathers were white. However, the reason for the casting can most clearly be summed as a way for POC to see themselves in history forming roles, as well as a chance for actors and performers to be cast in a diverse production. This message is what makes Hamilton important for a lot of people, especially alongside the way it embraced the musical culture of rap and applied to a time and atmosphere otherwise deemed too formal for such genres.

I believe that representation is a big issue in our society today. A lot of people of color have grown up seeing mostly white faces on the silver screen and Broadway, which does a lot to a person when they do not see someone like themselves in positions of fame or power. But, in recent years there has been an invigorating wave of creativity and diversity in the film industry and Broadway. Casts are becoming more diverse and POC are now more than ever seeing themselves in not only true story roles, but in big productions like Hamilton and Black Panther. Roles and productions where the reality of black excellence and talent are being embraced. I believe this shift has been a long time coming, but even more than that I believe that Hamilton was a factor in this new wave of art. A wave of art that recognizes the talent and ability of people of color as well as the wide-reaching impact a diverse cast can have.

Hamilton has impacted millions of different people all over the world and I believe that its diverse cast is the main reason why. POC viewers get to see people like themselves in utterly powerful, moving, and entertaining roles, which allows for confidence because there is someone who looks like them in a musical. It is also a work of pure musical and choreographical genius, that deserves all of the hype and awards it has garnered.
