Wake Up Your Week: Student Union Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

You know all of those colorful eye-catching flyers you see every week broadcasting Student Union events? Ever wondered what that’s all about? There are tons of SU events that happen weekly, all year-round, but how many people actually go to them? HerCampus decided to check some out to let you know what you’ve missed out on this semester, and what to start marking on your calendar for the fall!

This semester was full of super popular Student Union events drenched in spring tradition at Wake (Shag on the Mag anyone?) But there were also many other less talked-about events that were a blast for students, too.

If you and your friends are ever bored on a weeknight, consider attending a Student Union Short Course. Short courses are great because they are an opportunity to try something new and exciting, like glass blowing, something you haven’t done in ages, like pottery painting, or something you have always wanted to learn how to do, like sushi rolling. For many students, these events are a great break with friends away from the ZSR for an awesome and unique experience.

For those students craving some healthy competition against the other “quad” schools, Iron Chef was the go-to choice. If you haven’t heard, Wake Forest partnered up with the three other schools in the area (North Carolina School of the Arts, Salem College, and Winston-Salem State University) to coordinate on events and various initiatives. On April 15th, teams from the four schools competed for the title of “Iron Chef” using the secret ingredient, avocado. Fans from each of the schools came out to support their team, and it was a great event for the chefs and the supporters. Although Wake came in second place, students loved cheering on their friends in the race to make a three-course meal with the secret ingredient in only an hour.

Finally, Student Union hosted a benefit concert for the Aramark worker hit by a car last semester. Red, White, and Brew featuring country singer Josh Thompson happened last week to support Colleen Brehm – and they raised almost $1,000 in donations! Talk about pro humanitate! Wake students got free beer and a country concert, all while helping a great cause.

If you weren’t already excited about what Student Union is offering next semester, hopefully reading about all the fun you missed this semester will help get you in the mood for Tuesday Trivia, aWake All Night, Spring Fest, and much more.

So even if you don’t make it out to every Student Union event, consider trying something new next semester, and giving the lesser-known SU events a try!
