We’ve all been there—admiring this season’s trends as we flip through the glossy pages of our favorite style magazine. But too often, we’re inclined to disregard most of the mag’s style tips because they’re too runway-ish, too model-y. There’s no way you could pull that look off in real life, right? Wrong. You may not want to walk around campus looking like you just strutted off a Fashion Week runway, but you can certainly incorporate these high-fashion motifs into your everyday style.
InStyle recently published an article that transformed some of the fall’s top runway trends into office-appropriate outfits. Taking inspiration from that article, I’ve decided to dole out my 5 biggest runway hits that are collegiette™ appropriate (and encouraged!) for everyday wear!
1. The Secret to Sheer
Sheer clothing has got to be one of the hardest trends to make campus-appropriate. You don’t want to be that girl romping around the Quad (and in front of professors) in some see-through frock. Wearing a tank or tissue tee underneath, however, reduces that risqué element and makes your look daytime chic.
2. Amped up Black
The color-block trend can often make it look like you are ready for a night at Last Resort, but by simply adding an element of black to the ensemble, no one will think you are rewearing your outfit from last night, trust me.
3. Color Surge
As I said in my last post, beware of going too over-the-top when mixing bold colors and patterns. Wake senior, Mary Gigler, perfectly coordinates a solid, yet bright color with a bold necklace for a chic outfit ideal for class.
4. Grandpa Sweaters
Chunky knits are way in, and the runways galore are pairing them with dramatic skirts and pants. For a less all-out look, try belting a baggy sweater and wearing it with your favorite pair of skinny jeans or jeggings. Or if the top is long enough, wear it with leggings. You could also model two of this season’s trends by pairing a neutral-colored chunky sweater with a pair of brightly colored skinny jeans.
5. The Girly Man
And lastly, though the sophisticated tomboy look can be tricky, but if you use well-fitted items to complete your look, you’ll totally avoid looking frumpy. Rock a blazer with a cute tank tucked into skinny jeans or slim-cut pants. Don’t be afraid to get creative!
