I’ve always been the type of person who adapts to change well. I’ve never gotten homesick at college or sleepaway camp. But, then I went abroad. It’s hard to comprehend without living it, but it’s kind of an insane feeling to be dropped in a new country where you don’t speak the language and are told to just figure it out. Let’s just say the first few weeks involved a lot of Google Translate and getting lost.

But after the initial anxiety wore off, I quickly fell in love with Copenhagen. There is truly no city like it. So, in true Wake Forest fashion, I’m going to give you my “Top 10 Copenhagen Things” list, though it’s certainly not in order.

ONE: The Architecture
Copenhagen looks like something straight out of a storybook. The buildings are colorful and the city itself is so human-centric, encouraging walking, biking, and prioritizing green space.

TWO: Tivoli Gardens
Truly the best place ever and capable of curing any sort of funk. Tivoli is absolutely adorable, has super fun rides and delicious foods. Even better, it changes for the seasons, so I’m super excited to see the Halloween theme!

THREE: BMOs
Words won’t do this one justice. Copenhagen is well known for BMOs, which consists of the perfect crunchy-yet-soft sourdough bun with generous amounts of butter and cheese. It sounds simple, but it’s honestly life changing. I’m going to have to figure out how to make them back home.

FOUR: Shopping
Everyone is so fashionable because they really do have the greatest stores. Amazing brands, amazing thrifting, terrible for my bank account.

FIVE: The Canal
The water in Copenhagen is so clean you can swim in it anywhere. In the warmer months, my friends and I went for a dip and tanned. Now that it’s cooler, we’ll do cold plunges and then get into the saunas.

SIX: The Food Scene
Copenhagen boasts incredible restaurants. While I haven’t been to the world famous ones, there are more amazing spots than I’ll be able to fit in. There’s also great street food! Make sure to visit Reffen if you ever visit.

SEVEN: The Metro
This one might seem mundane, but being able to use and navigate the Metro is a game changer. It’s clean and so easy in comparison to New York!

EIGHT: Cafe Culture
Cafes in Copenhagen are so cozy and great places to do work or catch up with friends. Some even specify that they are “laptop free,” encouraging you to just enjoy the moment without screens.

NINE: Danish Culture
This could be an entire other article. Getting to experience Danish culture firsthand has been so incredible. While it is different than the U.S., there’s so much to learn and I am excited to become even more adjusted!

TEN: The People
One of the best parts about abroad has been the new people I’ve met. I only came in with one super close friend, and have made such great bonds that I know will carry beyond Copenhagen.
