Step By Step Guide to Unwavering Confidence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

It is really hard to feel confident sometimes, especially as a girl. There are so many pressures and negative influences in our world; it can be really easy to feel down.

Here are 5 tips to help you feel more confident:

1. Fake it ‘til you make it

You can’t just wake up one day and feel confident: it’s not possible. The trick is to act like you do! Just fake it, pretend you are confident and powerful. Fake it ‘til you make it! No one will know the difference and before you know it, you’ll stop faking and actually start believing yourself and feel confident.

2. Stop negative self-talk

What negative things do you tell yourself in your head? Are you constantly criticizing yourself or beating yourself up over stupid things? No wonder we feel so down! Take note of what you’re saying to yourself and consider being kinder. Let more things go and start giving yourself more compliments. No one’s perfect, and you will always be your own toughest critic. Give yourself a break and watch your confidence soar.

3. It’s all in your body language

Hold your head up high, look people in the eye and square your shoulders. When you introduce yourself, give a strong handshake. Simply changing your stance and body language will drastically increase your confidence. You will not only look but also feel stronger and more powerful.

4. Assume the best

Stop assuming people dislike you or are judging you. Assume the best! When someone is staring at your new shirt, instead of thinking they hate it and are judging you, think instead that they probably love it and are trying to figure out where you got it! Assume people love you and appreciate you. You will never know what people truly think about you so you might as well make it into something positive.

5. Find what you are proud of

At the end of every day, write three things that you are proud of. It can be anything that you feel you did really well that day. It might be hard at first, but stick to it. After a week of that, see how your self-confidence starts to increase. The more you focus on what you are doing right, the happier and more confident you will feel.

Confidence is a choice, not a trait. It’s not that some people have it and others don’t. Choose to fully believe in yourself and have faith. Your happiness and success is dependent on it.
