Shane Lutz (‘17)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Hometown: Sanford, N.C.

Year: Sophomore

Major/Minor: Possible English major with double minor in creative writing and religion

Involvement: Varsity Archery (Vice President of Events and Membership, Compound Division Leader, Spirit Captain, and Range Officer), Assistant Editor for the Old Gold & Black, Founder and President of The Prufrocks (an upcoming literary society)

Favorite Song: “Work Bxxch” by Britney Spears

Relationship Status: Single

This week’s Campus Cutie tells us about his love for writing and archery, as well as speaks openly about his sexuality.  Meet the friendly and passionate Shane Lutz!

HC (Her Campus): So, sophomore year has arrived.  Do you feel any different from freshman year?

SL (Shane Lutz): I do!  (Laughs) It feels good moving through the rest of my four years here at Wake and finally coming into my own, finding a home here, and building a foundation that will serve as a jumping point for the rest of my life.

HC: So seeing that you are very involved on campus, what takes up most of your time?

SL: Archery. Archery takes up all of my time as an executive officer on the team, and I am constantly doing things behind the scenes that others members don’t see.  Also, it is a varsity sport, even though a lot of people don’t realize it because we don’t get as much publicity as football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc.  But we do, in fact, do so much – I mean, we go to Belgium for an international competition.

HC: Very cool! So since you are always busy on campus, how do you make time for a social life?

SL: I don’t … the majority of my friends and people I hang out with are individuals whom I am involved with in groups and activities on campus.  I am constantly around them when I am attending all of the many events and organizations I am a part of. The few that are not, I hold very close to me.  I make sure to put aside time for them because they are very important in my life.

HC: What is the most embarrassing moment you’ve had here?

SL: (Laughs) One time I had a really attractive professor … and I mean – who doesn’t have a little crush on their really attractive professors?  One of my friends, in front of the entire class and my professor, called me out on it, and it was the worst time of my life.

HC: Getting personal, what is it like for you to be a gay, single man on the Wake Forest campus?

SL: It’s really difficult because the available options for dating are much slimmer. So it’s really hard to get into the dating scene here.  I wish it weren’t that way.

HC: If you ever had a chance to speak to the school about your experience as a gay individual at Wake Forest, what would you say?

SL: The one thing I would say to the entire campus is that tolerance is key and, more importantly, it’s all just about being treated equally. No special privileges; just treated like everyone else.  That’s all.

HC: Thank you for sharing. On another note, who is your role model?

SL: My role model would have to be Michael Scott.  He is a writer – an Irish author.  He is what got me into writing, poetry, and mythology.  He is basically what turned me into the person I am today.  I’ve read almost all of his books, and I hope to meet him one day.

HC: If you could have a movie that depicts your life, what would it be?

SL: It would be called “Unashaned” – the true story of a boy’s struggle to fame and fortune.

HC: What is your idea of the perfect day?

SL: The perfect day is getting some cocoa and going out to the front porch of a beach house in the Outer Banks, looking out across the water, and just writing … and having a dog in my lap.

HC: Awesome.  So what are you most excited about now that fall is finally here?

SL: I’m excited for the leaves to change colors and the weather because Wake Forest in the fall is probably the most beautiful time of the year.

HC: And Halloween is coming up soon.  Are you excited?

SL: So excited.  I’m super excited to dress up but I really want to do a couples costume.  So hint-hint out there if anyone wants to do a couples costume … hit me up!
