The Oscars Recap: The Winners

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Best Picture Winner: Parasite (2019)

With 1917 (2019) as the heavy favorite for many categories including Best Picture, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite was a welcome surprise as the upset winner. Parasite is the first non-English speaking film to win this award in all 92 years of Oscars history.

Actor in a Leading Role Winner: Joaquin Phoenix for Joker (2019)

For his stellar heartbreaking performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker, it comes as no surprise that Joaquin Phoenix was honored with this award. Though considered by many to be the best actor of his generation, this was Phoenix’s first Academy Award win after three previous nominations for Gladiator (2001), Walk the Line (2006), and The Master (2013).

Actress in a Leading Role Winner: Renée Zellweger for Judy (2019)

Renée Zellweger portrayed the legendary Judy Garland in this film. Zellweger was favored by the masses to win this award all season, so it comes as no surprise that she collected her second Academy Award on Sunday.

Actor in a Supporting Role Winner: Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019)

This award also comes as no surprise after Pitt collected awards for best supporting actor at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards this season for the same role. This is Pitt’s first Academy Award for acting, having previously received one as a producer for 12 Years a Slave (2014).

Actress in a Supporting Role: Laura Dern for Marriage Story (2019)

Dern was also a favorite for this award after receiving a BAFTA award and a Golden Globe earlier this year for her role in Marriage Story. This was her first Academy Award win and third nomination.

Directing: Bong Joon-Ho for Parasite (2019)

In another major upset in which Parasite beats out the heavily favored 1917, Bong Joon-Ho took home the Academy Award for best director over Sam Mendes who previously won a BAFTA award and Golden Globe for the direction of 1917.
