My Thoughts on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Valentine’s Day is swiftly approaching, the aisles in major stores have their displays full of candy, chocolate, and teddy bears. I, like many others, have conflicting feelings about the holiday. On one hand, it is society’s grand day of love and romance and all things coupley and cute. On the other, it’s a commercialized day that celebrates what should be present in a relationship every day and not just on February 14th.

Here are several reasons why I’m not the biggest supporter of Valentine’s Day

1. You never know how to interact with single people on V-Day and vice-versa  I absolutely abhor asking people about their plans for Valentine’s Day. It’s awkward for everyone involved. I never know how to respond to tales of romantic dinners or the solo netflix and chill. As someone who isn’t big on sharing personal parts of dating and relationships, it’s awkward for me to share my plans or lack-thereof as the case may be.

2.  People use Valentine’s Day as THE day to express how they feel I belong to the camp of “every day should be Valentine’s Day.” That isn’t to say that the expectation that everyday you should get dressed to the 9s and eat an expensive romantic meal, but you should express your feelings for your partner every day. If you really care about them they should know that year round, not just February 14th.

3. It’s sooooo commercialized I’m that person who cringes when things become too mainstream. I like the basic concept of Valentine’s Day– who wouldn’t want to celebrate their love for someone else– but companies have corrupted and commercialized the holiday and reduced it down to Chocolates, Teddy Bears, and Roses. The fact that it’s become so cliche and instagrammable or facebooked makes me think Valentine’s Day has become about competition and lavishness and not about love or togetherness.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t celebrate the Holiday. I think it can be romantic and amazing and meaningful but what I’m really getting at is why do you celebrate the way you do? Are you competing for the ‘gram? Or is it really a celebration of your relationship and a quality date night? However, you spend your Tuesday Night, I hope you enjoy it!
