March is my favorite month of the year. It marks my birthday, the start of spring, and a few weeks of nice weather before the North Carolina pollen hits. Here at Wake Forest, it marks Wake ‘N Shake, the second mainstage theatrical show, and spring break. As it draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past thirty-one days; more specifically, on what has been occupying my thoughts and time.
In no particular order, these are the top five recipients of my attention this past month:
- Heated Rivalry
I know I’m so late to this trend, but I have been LOVING Heated Rivalry. I read the book, then watched the show, then watched it again with my friends. I think, now more than ever, we need depictions of queer joy, and the show was just so well-made.
- Stardew Valley
Recently, I have been getting back into cozy games, and I have played 40 hours of Stardew Valley in the past two weeks…As classes begin to ramp up for the end of the semester, I have loved getting to unwind by caring for my animals and watering my crops.
- Ron Rash
I have been reading a lot of Ron Rash lately – Saints at the River, Serena, The Caretaker, The Cove – and can’t recommend his work enough. His historical fiction is incredibly detailed, and his characters are always delightfully messy.
- Jagged Little Pill
I am working on the wardrobe for Wake’s upcoming production of “Jagged Little Pill”, and I think it is genuinely my favorite show we’ve done. The choreography is incredible, and every actor is so, so talented. There are so many wonderful things I could say, but I think everyone who reads this should simply go see it for themselves.
- Focus Friends
Focus Friends is an app (developed by Hank Green!) that gamifies focusing in such a cute way! You set a timer, focus for that amount of time, and your bean knits socks that you can exchange for virtual furniture. As I have been fighting the urge to spend all my time doom-scrolling, it has been such a lifesaver in getting things done.
