Melodic Mumblings: Applause for “Applause”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

So, I don’t know if you love Lady Gaga as much as I do, but she is my girl. It seemed to me though, that there was a period where she was pretty quiet in the music scene. In her absence of making music and appearing at events, I was truly upset. But finally, when her single “Applause” was resealed August 12, 2013, her “little monsters” no longer had to wait with baited breath.

I have to admit, the first time I listened to it, I wasn’t very impressed. The first 15 seconds sound a bit like someone is just hammering on a keyboard. However, Lady Gaga’s soulful voice soon breezes into the intro. to save the day. The more I listened to it, the more I fell in love with the song. It’s just one of those songs that you can’t help but get up and dance to. Similar to most other Lady Gaga songs, some lyrics are flow easily like poetry, while other parts are simplistic enough for anyone to sing (or scream) their heart out to.

An exciting prospect: this song was only a preview of her newest album titled “Artpop,” expected November 11. However, Lady Gaga does have a lot to live up to. Her first album, “The Fame,” was one of the most successful albums ever released featuring the songs “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” and “Love Game.” She reinvented herself yet again in the “Telephone” collaboration with Beyonce and hits like “Bad Romance” and “You and I.”

Although a few of her songs didn’t reach the top of the Billboard list, they showed her ability to constantly change her music style and expand her audience. So, I’m left wondering how her album Artpop will affect the music world. Will it skyrocket to the top of fan and radio playlists or be filed under yet another dance-pop mediocre Gaga tune? Only the fans will be able to decide. Stay tuned.
