How To Survive the Rough Patch In a Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

If you’ve been with your boyfriend for a while and the relationship seems a little less fun, a little less exciting, and you seem to have trouble relating to each other, you might be going through a rough patch. The rough patch comes after the honeymoon phase is over and the “work” of a relationship starts to set in.  All relationships take effort, and sometimes there are periods where more effort is required.

One way to survive the rough patch is to mentally ask yourself what’s changed between the two of you and try to find ways to add that element back into the relationship. If you sent or received a good morning or good night text every day and you miss that little bit of effort, ask for it back. Sometimes showing your own effort aids getting effort in return.  If you feel like you can’t communicate how you feel anymore, evaluate what’s holding you back. Did you have a big argument or disagreement to make you feel this way?  Address the problems head on so you can get back to the way things were.

Another way to survive the rough patch is to simply be patient. Sometimes one or both of you are dealing with a short term stressor that’s taking your attention away from each other. Acknowledging that sometimes life gets in the way and not stressing over the separation will go a long way towards reconnecting. Sometimes putting unnecessary pressure on each other will make the rough patch worse and not better. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open, and take it one day at a time.

Every relationship goes through a rough time where you don’t seem as connected, one or both of you are busy…etc. Keep in mind why you got together, and remember that sometimes life happens.
