How To Fashion Friday: Spring Florals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

These past few days of spring teaser weather we’ve all been enjoying has inspired me to begin thinking about one thing in particular: spring fashion. There is no greater feeling than shedding your winter coats, boots and wool socks, some brightly colored dresses and, perhaps, light sweaters.

It seems inevitable that once the spring fashion season rolls around, florals are reintroduced into our everyday wardrobe. As if planting flowers in a garden weren’t enough, people want them on their clothes too. But, this year’s designers are putting a few innovative spins on the floral fashion trend to produce something fresh, modern and not overdone.

1. The Gothic Surfer. We have all seen (and possibly worn to a tacky frat party) those typical surfer/Hawaiian floral prints. Imagine those big, cartoon-looking flower shirts that really should only worn by fathers in a beach setting – if even then. Well, this season Marc Jacobs is changing it up by giving these prints a more gothic feel with his choice of colors such as black and red.

I understand a Marc Jacobs high-fashion collection may be a teensy bit out of the average clothing price range. Here’s what I suggest for you: try a floral patterned romper with a dark leather jacket or cardigan. Urban Outfitters just recently put out a collection of floral rompers that would be perfect for this look.

2. Collaged Floras. Christian Dior shows his opinion on florals in a very modern way by giving his patterns more of an urban feel. This style choice diminishes the traditional “girly” feel of flowers and allows women with different styles the ability to experiment with flowers.

Your version: pair a floral sweater with a solid t-shirt, jeans and possibly combat boots. Or, pair the cardigan with a cool graphic tee.

3. Three-Dimensional. Dolce and Gabbana gave their florals a literal “pop” by making them three-dimensional. This unique element added a novel and modern flare to the traditional floral pattern. Not to mention, an outfit implementing this trend would be a total conversation starter.

Your version: make your florals 3-D by wearing a headband with flowers that pop off.

Remember fahsionistas, just have fun with the latest trend! The more creative you get, the more people will stop and admire your fashion audacity. Whether you’re sticking with a more traditional spring look or searching for the latest three-dimensional floral dress – rock what you wear!
