Freshman Problems: Class Registration as Explained by The Office

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Even with first semester winding down, it’s hard for freshmen like myself to believe there’s more to a college education than the four classes I’m taking right now. Now that registration for the second semester is upon us, it’s time for every freshman to join the big kids and register for classes on our own for the first time. Yes, it seems pretty simple: pick a couple classes, fill a few requirements, avoid that 8 AM. But the registration process can be complicated in more ways than one.

1. Your registration time. Ah yes, the most important lottery there is and ever was. That first time slot for registration can make or break your scheduling competitive edge. It’s basically the college version of The Hunger Games, but with a little bit of advanced planning and plenty of back-up options for freshmen (because let’s be honest, the classes you really want will already be taken by upperclassmen).

2. Decisions, Decisions: Classes Edition. Deciding between two possible classes is basically Sophie’s choice at this point. This is especially true for freshmen; with tons of divisionals to fill and no set major to follow, the number of possible schedule-routes seems infinite.

3. Game time. When you’re picking your classes, have a plan in advance so if you’re first choice is snagged, you’ll still have plenty of options you know you like. Take a look into what classes sound interesting or fun, and ask around from friends about which professors they enjoyed first semester. Don’t just play the game – win the game.

4. Sweet Victory. As a freshman, the relief you feel after the registration process can be compared to the relief you feel after turning in a big paper. Whether registration is a breeze or a major stressor for you, everyone winds up with a schedule that works out in the end.
