Forest Fads: Coconut Oil

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

With all the hype generated by Parents’ Weekend, Fall Break, and the upcoming President’s Ball, (not to mention we go to #WorkForest and have no free time) it can be easy to forget to take care of our health. However, there is one amazing product we can use to solve some of our beauty problems.

Let me introduce you to nature’s fix all:  coconut oil.

Coconut oil is an edible oil that comes from the meat of a matured coconut. It can be consumed or applied topically for a variety of benefits, including…

  1. Fat burning and increased metabolism.
Studies show that coconut oil has a powerful affect on the body’s ability to burn fat. It does this by promoting thermogenesis (an increase in the body’s metabolism) and by keeping blood sugar levels steady. Coconut oil is super effective in doing this because it the richest source of medium chain fatty acids which are burnt up quickly by the body. Consuming this healthy fat while also consuming carbs helps keep your blood sugar from spiking and prevents you from storing fat!

  2. Glowing Skin
Whether you apply it topically or ingest it, coconut oil is amazing for your skin. Coconut oil provides a deeper moisturization than any store-bought moisturizer. This is because store-bought products are typically water-based, which means once the water evaporates, your face will be dry again. Coconut oil locks in moisture, clears away dead skin cells and its high antibacterial properties help to keep acne and other skin problems at bay.
  3. Lucious hair
Coconut oil has the ability to make your hair softer than even the most expensive conditioner on the market. This is due to its ability to penetrate the cortex of your hair. Commercial products that claim to “soften” your hair only coat the outside, leaving a temporary shine. Using coconut oil actually allows the hair to absorb nutrients and strengthen.

These are just a few of the benefits coconut oil has to offer. There are hundred of ways to use this amazing oil and the best part is, its not expensive and a little goes a long way!
