Welcome (back) to Wake y’all. It sounds real cliché but I just can’t believe how time flies and I am now starting my final year at Wake. One of the biggest changes that took place in town during my time here is probably the Innovation Quarter and downtown. When I was a freshman, nobody had class at downtown, not to mention heading there to eat, shop, and hang out. It took me quite some time to find out that downtown Winston is full of hidden gems. If you are a foodie like me, here is a not complete but pretty comprehensive guide to food spots at downtown Winston. Take advantage of your classes at IQ and the free shuttle, explore and enjoy!

Yamas

This new place in town is quickly becoming every lover of Mediterranean food’s favorite. If you want a break from Forest Green and Village Juice but still stick to a healthy diet, go to Yamas and get a sandwich, salad, or grain bowl. The variety of spreads, proteins, and toppings can satisfy any picky eater. What is better than a wholesome meal that happens to be so fresh and delicious?

Crafted

This taco joint calls itself “the art of taco”, and it definitely lives up to its own words. Their tacos are carefully crafted and packed with flavors. The restaurant also has a very cool and post-modern vibe that may be qualified for s Instagram post.

Camino Bakery

The OG spot in downtown Winston that every Wake student go for brunch, a cup of mid-day coffee, a freshly baked loaf of bread, or a weekend study session. They offer a huge selection of baked goods for your sweet tooth: pastries, cookies, amazing cheesecake slices, you name it. They also have loads of gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options to complement different food allergies and dietary restrictions.

Black Mountain Chocolate

Who doesn’t want some local craft chocolate? This is the place in town to not only buy and taste North Carolina’s own truffles, chocolate chunk cookies, brownies and hot chocolate but also get your hands dirty and experience some chocolate making.

Mozelle’s

Mozelle’s offered arguably my most enjoyed dining experience here in Winston. If you are planning a date night, a place for dinner with mom and dad who come all the way to visit you on parent’s weekend, or just an experience that will transform your prejudice against southern cuisine, give Mozelle’s a chance. Sure they will impress you with the cozy environment, warm services, amazing food, and delightful desserts.

It’s my sacred duty to insert a picture of my personal fav: the tomato pie.

Krankies

Another OG coffee that offers a great selection of coffee and brunch choices and is awfully close to Wake IQ. Stop by for an after-class coffee or snack.

Cugino Forno Pizza

A brand new pizzeria is bringing the taste of Napoli to Bailey Power Plant, right across from Wake Forest IQ. I have yet to give this place a try but I definitely heard enough good things about it to grant it a spot on my list of recommendations. If you are drawn to the traditional Neapolitan-style, thin crust pizza with fresh ingredients, Cugino Forno may be your new found love.
