Foodie: Dine Out at the Village Tavern

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Village Tavern: the quintessential restaurant of Winston-Salem, known and loved by Wake students and locals alike, where you can get anything from teriyaki chicken to the old, southern favorite of shrimp and grits. With a menu so diverse you could spend hours combing through options, or you could go straight for the classic Tavern burger.

Homemade and fresh on a brioche bun, you can’t go wrong with simple lettuce, tomato, red onion, American cheese, and a juicy, tender patty with “Secret Sauce.” What’s the secret, you ask? You’ll have to try it to find that one out for yourselves, but I promise you won’t be sorry.

Don’t stop now. You can’t just go for a burger and leave without trying the true star of this meal – Tavern sweet potato fries. It may seem generic, but here’s the kicker: instead of the typical salty flavor we all know and love, these fries are topped with cinnamon sugar for a sweet, flavorful surprise to follow your main course. And don’t skimp out on the honey mustard sauce! Its spicy flavor is a perfect twist on this already unique side dish.

You could be done right there. In fact, you probably should be. But if you really want to live it up on a night away from pit pizza and Moe’s, I wouldn’t blame you if you stayed for dessert. Warning: do NOT embark on this endeavor alone. Tavern desserts are way too big to finish alone and too good to stop yourself from doing so! So when they say “Very Best Carrot Cake,” they’re not kidding. Rich, moist, cinnamon-y goodness topped with delectable cream cheese frosting will have your mouth still watering by the time you are ready to pay the check, and when you leave, you can bet that it won’t be long until you’re back for more.
