He’s goofy, musical and well-rounded. Meet Dave Hutchinson, musical director of Wake’s male a cappella group, Plead the Fifth, and this week’s Campus Cutie!

HC (Her Campus): What’s it like being a member and the music director of Plead the Fifth?
DH (Dave Hutchinson): It’s a lot of fun just being with a group of guys who get together and sing, but at the same time, we don’t take it too seriously. We’re there to have fun, we’re not there to be professional musicians at all. It’s really fun just being on stage, making people laugh.

HC: I saw you guys at the Breast Cancer Fashion Show!
DH: Yeah, that was fun! There were so many people there, but we actually do a lot of gigs like that. We do more off campus than most people realize.

HC: So why did you decide to join?
DH: I joined freshman year second semester after seeing them at some event – I thought it was a cool idea. I’ve been singing pretty much my whole life. My dad sang, my sister sings, I also play piano and guitar, so I’ve just been musical for a while.

HC: Do you have a favorite or a most memorable Plead the Fifth performance?
DH: One of the coolest ones was when we were in Virginia. We stayed there for a couple of nights so we bonded as a group. During the performance we were all in spotlights and then we got a standing ovation from the entire audience – I felt like I was in boy band!

HC: Would you say that was like being in Pitch Perfect?
DH: Sure (laughs). It was kind of like that. It’s like movie star status.

HC: Who are some of the artists you’re into right now?
DH: Right now I’m into Imagine Dragons, I just think they’re really interesting. And I always like Zac Brown Band. They’re great. I could listen to them for days on repeat.

HC: What was the last concert you went to?
DH: This summer I was in London, so a lot of the bars we went to would have local bands, which was really cool. Especially in Edinburgh – they would play Scottish music for a bit and then they’d play an American hit. And then you’re like, “Wait! I’m in Scotland and you’re playing American music!” That was funny and I guess that counts as a concert.

HC: What song would you say describes your life right now?
DH: “Don’t Stop Believing.” I’ve got a lot of work to do, but I’ll make it.

HC: Do you have any hidden talents?
DH: Well, this is not apparent, but I wrestled from kindergarten through high school.

HC: What are some of your major pet peeves?
DH: Not much gets on my nerves. It’s a classic pet peeve, but when people say “melk” instead of “milk.” That’s annoying.

HC: Who is your current celebrity crush?
DH: I personally think Miley Cyrus is good looking. The short hair I could do without, but overall, I think she’s alright. That might be controversial, but that’s where I’m at right now.

HC: So what’s the first thing you notice about a girl?
DH: I guess eyes. Eyes – “the windows to the soul.”

HC: What do you do to impress a girl that you like?
DH: Sometimes I just try to bust out dance moves – they’re not that good, but I’m working on them.

HC: If you could use any song as a pick-up line, which song would you use?
DH: It depends on how bold I’d want to be. I’d go with “Haven’t Met You Yet” by Michael Bublé, but I would change up the lyrics somehow to make it like “I Found You” or something. I don’t know. It would work… eventually.

HC: What do you think are the most important qualities in a girl?
DH: They definitely have to be humorous. I like to joke around a lot, and if they don’t understand my humor, it would just be awkward. Also, they have to be intelligent to some degree.

HC: What do you think are your most attractive qualities?
DH: I guess I’m just a well-rounded guy. I can pretty much do a lot of different things. I’m not just like, “Oh, he’s really smart” – I’m like averagely smart. I can sing, I play piano, I’m fairly musical. So yeah, I’m just well-rounded.

HC: What’s your ideal date?
DH: I’d somehow fly to Chicago because that’s where I’m from – the best city in the world. I’d just walk around and show them the city – there’s so much to do. There’s a ferris wheel; we could go on that. We’d have an orchestra because you’ve got to be romantic. So yeah, I’d spend time with them doing casual things, like ferris wheel rides and orchestras.

HC: What are you looking forward to most during your time at Wake, before you graduate?
DH: I guess just having the time of my life. My parents and siblings are like, “College is the best time; it’s so much fun before you’re actually in the real world.” I’m like, “What does that even mean?” So I’m looking forward to just living it up here and making the most of every moment.

HC: Do you have anything left on your Wake Forest bucket list?
DH: Yeah, totally. I still haven’t even rolled the quad – I always miss it. There are so many classic Wake Forest things that I’ve never done. So that’s why I have to live it up while I can.

HC: So is there any chance of you becoming a famous singer one day?
DH: Definitely. I might end up on American Idol at some point. Otherwise, I’ll probably become a YouTube sensation. Right now I’m working on becoming a Twitter celebrity. I started a couple days ago and right now I have about 20 followers (laughs) – I’m killin’ it.
