Thanks to Punxsutawney Phil, we are set to endure another six weeks of winter. (Side note: Mr. Groundhog, did you not check the weather today? It was 65 and sunny. Collegiettes™ rocked shorts and tanks on the Quad.)

Nevertheless, we must wait until March to catch spring fever. And what better way to cope with the woes of winter than with good old-fashioned comfort food right in your dorm? When the going gets tough – and the Pit just won’t cut it – we’ve got you covered. Here are some of our favorite dorm room comfort foods!

Hot Cocoa is a staple for college students (next to coffee, of course). Sometimes hot tea just won’t cut it, so grab a packet of Swiss Miss, heat up water (or milk if you prefer) and mix away! You’re just minutes away from a sweet, comforting treat! Add some marshmallows for good measure, if you’re wanting to go all-out.

Easy Mac may not be the healthiest option, but sometimes a bowl of cheese-covered noodles is just what you need. Don’t make it a part of your daily diet, but for those chilly winter nights, heating up a bowl of macaroni sounds better than trekking across campus to the Pit for lackluster pizza and fries.

Chicken Noodle Soup for the collegiette’s™ soul – and it’s easy on the pocketbook! Next time you find yourself at Harris Teeter or Lowe’s Foods, grab a couple cans of chicken noodle soup and saltines, and save them for a cold, rainy, dreary winter evening. It’s amazing what soup can do!

Homemade Apple Crisp will satisfy your craving for comfort food and your sweet tooth. Forget those fattening McDonald’s apple-pie-wannabes. Try this instead: mix slices of apple, a handful of granola, and a touch of cinnamon with 1 tablespoon butter. Microwave mixture until apples are browned and soft.

Chocolate-Chip-Cookie Oatmeal sound really unhealthy … yet we can’t resist. Instead of stocking up on Chips Ahoy at the grocery store, try this alternative: chocolate chip oatmeal. Cook plain oatmeal according to the directions, add chocolate chips (milk or dark chocolate), sugar (or sugar substitute), and a dash of brown sugar. Voila! A healthy alternative to those tempting, devilish Pit cookies!

Banana Pudding is an American classic. Fortunately for us, collegiettes™, it’s easy to make right in your dorm room and relatively figure-friendly! All you need is instant pudding mix, milk, bananas, vanilla wafers, and whipped cream (optional). Make this for you and your friends, and I guarantee you’ll forget the nasty coldness outside.

Mr. Groundhog may have predicted 6 more weeks of winter, but we know that this means one thing: six more weeks of yummy comfort food made right in your dorm room!
