Now that classes are in full force, I’m sure you’ve ventured into the ZSR at least a few times already this year. As the first tests of the semester are quickly approaching, here are some tips to help you survive your first late-night ZSR study sesh!

                                                                                                                               *Image from magazine.wfu.edu

  1. Book a ZSR study room!

The key to successful studying is learning how to focus. If you’re constantly socializing with your new besties, you’re definitely not focused enough to retain any substantial amount of information to ace that exam! The perfect way to find peace and quiet amidst all the construction in the library is by booking a study room. Just click this link: http://zsr.wfu.edu/studyrooms/ and reserve your room. You can reserve study rooms up to four days in advance for two hour blocks of time.

  1. Ditch the Headphones

Why study more than you have to? Instead of studying longer, study smarter! In 2012, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute conducted a study which showed that listening to music through headphones while studying affects your brain’s ability to retain information. Headphones cover your ears and inhibit efficient studying. If you’re in need of some form of noise while studying, put on quiet background music. Background music can actually be beneficial because listening to it requires intense concentration and forces you to focus while studying.

  1. Avoid the Sundry Candy Bins

Not only are the Sundry candy bins a major contributor to the Freshman 15, eating these sugary snacks while studying can lead to an energy crash which will leave you feeling lethargic. Instead, eat foods with protein or whole grains that will keep your energy levels consistent.

  1. Get a SLIGHT caffeine fix

College is the time when people realize the amazing ability of caffeine! I could stay awake for days if I had unlimited amounts of coffee. Unfortunately, this isn’t healthy for your body! Refrain from having caffeinated beverages multiple times a day. A tall coffee from Starbucks contains 260mg of caffeine and should be sufficient for keeping you awake for your late-night ZSR study sesh!

     5.   Study Breaks to Refresh

Study breaks are not a bad thing in small amounts! Treat yourself to a five minute break after every two hours of studying to refresh and revive. Just make sure those five minute breaks don’t turn into half hour gossip sessions about that cute frat boy that you met last weekend! After your break is over, Focus, Focus, Focus!

Everyone will have a late night in the ZSR at some point this year; so study smart and you’ll survive. Always remember, you got into Wake Forest for a reason!
