Here at HCWFU, we are always trying to find new ways to get off campus and get out there because, hey, let’s face it, as wonderful as Wake is, every collegiette needs some worldly adventure sometimes! Read on for a dose of excitement that will stove off that restless feeling, and keep you slim to boot.

Lift, Tone, Burn: A Pure Barre Workout

Are you tired of your monotonous routine of the elliptical and treadmill at the Miller Center?

Then walk over to Reynolda Village, where a branch of the popular Pure Barre studio just opened. This workout is geared towards women who seek quick results, as it claims to lift your seat, tone your thighs, and burn fat to create the long lean muscles of dancer in just 10 sessions. Don’t worry, you won’t need any previous dance experience to feel the burn in this class. Expect your legs to be shaking, your abs to be burning, and your heart to be pounding during this 55-minute, full-body workout inspired by Pilates, ballet, and weight-lifting moves. The instructors are friendly and helpful, and like any quality workout, they play upbeat music to get you motivated to lift, tone, and burn.

So the next time you don’t feel like fighting the hoards of students at the Miller Center, consider grabbing a friend and making a trip to Pure Barre and experience one of the most effective workouts out there. And if you need extra motivation, you and your friend can always reward yourself with a latte at Simply Yummy post-workout.

Dance Your A** Off: Zumba

If you haven’t heard of Zumba before, you are in for a treat. Originating in Colombia, Zumba is a dance-fitness program that incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves with aerobic elements, like lunges, squats, and core exercises. With bumping music and a high-energy atmosphere, Zumba feels like a night out at the club, with the added bonus of a truly effective work-out. And it gives you results. You’ve seen Shakira, right?

Zumba classes are offered all over Winston-Salem, but a popular option is at Gold’s Gym on Reynolda road. Their membership price is feasible for a spending-savy collegiette, and their Zumba classes are offered at various times during the week.

Find Your Inner-Zen: Yoga

Unlike Pure Barre and Zumba, most of us worldly collegiettes have heard of, probably even tried yoga. But what you probably didn’t know is that Winston-Salem is a particular hot-spot for some seriously fantastic yoga studios. If you’re looking to get toned, flexible, and of course, centered, traversing off-campus away from the ho-hum of your usual hectic life can make for a super-relaxing activity.

Village Yoga on Northwest Boulevard offers a variety of classes, from Yoga Synergy (for beginners) to Hot Power Flow Yoga (if you want a higher-intensity work-out), and everything in between. The Yoga Gallery on Trade Street is downtown, in the art district of Winston-Salem, so if atmosphere is your thing, this funky spot is worth a visit. Finally, Bikram Yoga on Fayette Street, also located in Greensboro, is a popular studio for Wake students. It offers the Bikram method of yoga, exclusively, but the classes are frequent (and reasonably priced), and offer the promise to change your body, change your life. Sounds pretty good to us!
