Walking into Sephora is an experience. Everywhere you look, there are different products that all essentially do the same thing. The foundation products scream out to you, “I’ll keep wrinkles at bay,” or, “I’ll help cover up your acne.” While some of this is true – it will help your skin appear clear and fresh – it can be a very overwhelming experience. It’s like a tug of war battle for your attention. However, it is imperative to find the right formula and color for your skin. Here are my tips for finding the right foundation shade like a pro:

Test the foundation on your neck. You want the shade to blend seamlessly from your face to your neck. If you test a patch only on your cheek, you could end up with the dreaded Snooki orange look; and no one wants that. It’s just not cute, ladies.

Try different formulas. You might stick with one formula for a while; I sure did. Then, spontaneously, I woke up one morning and realized I hated the foundation I was using and that it did nothing for me. Makeup should work for you, not against you. It’s okay to use a powder foundation for a while and then switch to a liquid foundation. The fun part about makeup is there are no rules, except when doing a smoky eye (it should always be paired with nude lips, but that’s just my two cents). Aside from that, you are free to play around and see what you like.

Find the right brush. Finding the right brush is like finding your soulmate – hopefully you will just know when you have found the one, and it will feel just right. The most important thing you want in a brush is one that blends well. Whether that be the classic beauty blender or a round fluffy brush is up to you!
