3 Ways to Pick Yourself Up When You’re Down

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Not all days are good days. Everyone feels down sometimes. Some days it’s hard just to put one foot in front of the other. A bad test grade, a fight with a parent or even just bad weather can get you down. And that’s okay! Life isn’t supposed to be perfect, and you can’t always be happy all the time. If you’re having a bad day and need a little boost, here are three things you can do to cheer yourself up:

Go for walk.

Cliché or not, fresh air and nature can do wonders for your mood. If you’re feeling stressed out, sad or just plain lazy, grab your headphones and take a quick lap around campus. It gets you up and moving and will refresh you. Also, light exercise is proven to release endorphins and increase your mood! Just 10 minutes of brisk walking will definitely make you day just a little bit more manageable.

Enjoy yourself.

Spend an hour doing something you love. Watch TV, read a book, take an exercise class or color in a coloring book. Then, let yourself enjoy it. Don’t think about all the stuff you have to do, or whatever is bothering you. Truly be present in the moment and feel the joy that that activity brings you! An hour of fun is guaranteed to lift your spirits and bring some light back into your day.

Talk to someone.

Call your mom, your sister or text your best friend from home. Tell them what’s on your mind and let them comfort you. Sometimes just articulating how you feel will help you figure out what exactly is bothering you, and they can help you fix it. Also, sometimes just having someone say, “it’s going to be okay” helps you feel better. Talking it out will lighten the burden of a tough day and help you gain perspective. Also, your friends and family always know how to get you laughing, which is guaranteed to lift your spirits!

Bad days don’t have to be horrible days. Make an effort to do one of these three things next time you’re struggling!
