12 Spooky October Songs by Bewitching Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

October has arrived— and so have flannels, candy corn, a brand new season of American Horror Story, and EVERYTHING pumpkin spice— literally, everything. When the Spook-Tober vibes start to flood in, there’s no better way to spice up your day-to-day college life than to have a solid fall-mood playlist. Whether you are walking to class, late-night grinding at Starbucks (with the help of several pumpkin cream cold brews, of course), rallying for Halloweekend, or just hanging around the newly reddening trees of the Forest— these enchanting tunes are sure to channel your inner witch-goddess while keeping you chilled out for October midterms.

1. October Song- Amy Winehouse

Spin this one while you sip on a pumpkin spice latte. There are strong coffee-shop vibes to this one. Or just spin any Amy Winehouse song, really. Amy’s got one hell of a voice, and this jazzy tune is sure to entrance you with all of its soul.

2. Spooky- Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

This one is a classic. Soulful, romantic, and radiating powerful female vocals, this one is a sure mood-booster that also gets you thinking of all things Halloween.

3. Crystal- Stevie Nicks

This sedating tune is one for you post-midterm chill-out. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the tone of this one is bewitching. Stevie Nicks is the Supreme Witch of music, and she will cast a spell on you.

4. Spellbound- Siouxsie and the Banshees

For when your spicy coffee drink just doesn’t seem to get you to your morning classes, spin this punk-ridden tune. Empower yourself with Siouxsie Sioux’s beckoning vocals and Budgie’s thundering drums.

5. Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)- Concrete Blonde

Halloween is the time to bring on the spunk, so this one sticks with the punk theme. Give this track a listen when trying on scary halloween costumes, or hitting up downtown Winston-Salem for nighttime fall adventures. You won’t be disappointed.

6. Black Magic- Magic Wands

This one is a sure fav for a good ol’ power-walk through Reynolda trail. It’s edgy feminine energy is perfect for the pop-rock lover.

7. Special Death- Mirah

If you are American Horror Story-obsessed like the rest of us, you will probably recognize this one from Tate Langdon and Violet’s sexual-tension ridden encounters that we all secretly love. This tune is creepy, for sure, but strangely enticing.

8. Ghost- Halsey

As we delve into the wonderful world of pop, give the stripped edition a listen as well. This one is a sure nighttime track for cosy late-night studying in the dorm when NC’s temperature begins to drop. Think christmas lights, cinnamon scent in the oil diffuser, and thick woven blankets. With this song in the background, your study setup just doesn’t get much better.

9. Gingerbread Man- Melanie Martinez

Perhaps, you want to jump the gun and get ready and festive for the Holidays. Nevertheless, the melody has that classic, spooky Melanie charm that we all know and love when the jack-o-lanters begin to come out.

10. Witch- the bird and the bee

Gorgeous female vocals, enthralling lyrics, and charmingly spooky instrumentals. What more do you need in a fall song?

11. House of the Rising Sun- Lauren O’Connell

We all know the classic by The Animals, but Lauren O’Connell brings an entirely new vibe. This song is hauntingly glamorous. Mellow out with her folk twist on the blues classic.

12. Mad House- Rihanna

What good is a list of songs by bewitching women without Rhi Rhi? This song is a banger, enough said. If this one doesn’t make you think of haunted houses and raging Halloween parties adorned in fake cobwebs, then I don’t know what will. When midterms are finished and you’re rallying for Halloweekend, this song is ESSENTIAL.
