The transition from 2017 to 2018 was filled with many different headlines that put us all in a daze. This is my rundown of the top ten biggest headlines in the past few weeks!

1. Times Up! And Me Too Movements

Women took the world by storm with movements focused on preventing and ending sexual violence against women. With women coming out daily to call out alleged abusers it raises the question of social media’s effect on people’s lives. The Weinstein story was developed and researched over months while most allegations now are on Twitter or Instagram with no evidence or supporting stories to back them up. Did a powerful and needed movement potentially start a witch hunt or give more voices permission to be heard?

2. #BlackHogwarts

Me: I need a new wand. My old one broke.

Mom: You got new wand money? You better put some duct tape on and pray on that wand to work again. Me:

3. Don Lemon and others clap back for the “shithole” country comment allegedly made by the President

In the wake of allegations against President Trump for calling Haiti, El Salvador and African countries shitholes many people called him out on how disgusting and unpresidential the statement was. Seeing as the eight year anniversary of the Haitian earthquake just passed this created a storm of responses across social media and news stations across the country.

4. Meghan and Harry: rule-breakers and heartbreakers

Prince Harry has broken the hearts of millions as he is officially off the market. While still filled with awkward gestures and an uncomfortable smile, he is slightly more relaxed in the public eye with the support of his future bride Meghan. While they have broken the silent rules of limited physical contact in public, they have both shown great improvement and promise when it comes to their royal duties.

5. Golden Globes Black Dress Protest

Actresses planned to wear black as a silent protest in response to the wake of sexual violence in the acting and television communities. Women who are in the forefront of movements to better the lives of women in the workforce and society. While women took the time to consistently spread the message of empowerment and equality, women like Rose McGowan who sparked the recent movements were noticeably absent.

6. Logan Paul is dropped by YouTube

After a disgusting video where he records a dead body in the well known Japanese ‘suicide forest’ he lost a lot of followers and support. After other videos were also determined to be culturally insensitive his deals with YouTube were cancelled and his YouTube channel has been inactive since his lackluster apology.

7. All the Kardashians are pregnant….right?

Kim is expecting her baby within the next few weeks, Khloe in the next few months and Kylie is still in hiding. While speculation is high it is also a possibility that she is taking a long needed break as she has talked about it for a while now on their show. While nothing is confirmed about her, everyone is excited to welcome two new Kardashian babies after all the struggles both of these moms-to-be have gone through.

8. NHL Players are NOT allowed at the Winter Olympics

The Olympics will be filled with lesser known names in the hockey world as the International Olympic Committee refused to pay for the NHL players to participate in the Olympics. This means that the US team and many other countries to look for college athletes and other professional players to fill out their rosters.

9. Nigeria’s first bobsled team, and it’s all because of three strong women

Making history has been the theme this winter. Three young women, originally from Nigeria but based in the US, made history by entering as the first Nigerian bobsled team. These track stars are set to make their mark at the Winter Olympics, and the whole world will be watching.

10. Virginia Tech puts athletics and money before students needs…again!

Virginia Tech received $15.2 million from a donor to create a student athletic performance center that caters only to the 22 recognized intercollegiate sports. While the cries for housing, parking and countless other logical concerns go unheard; the athletes get a facility that no one else is allowed to use and is a questionable use of resources.
