Why It Is Important to Do Things Alone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Have you ever gone shopping by yourself? I don’t just mean a quick run to the grocery store. We’re talking a day spent at the mall completely alone. Or to see a movie at the theatre just you? What about eating at a restaurant alone? Even a trip solo?

If you can answer yes to any of those questions, I applaud you girlfriend! If you can’t, I am here to tell you that you should absolutely test it out. Let me tell you how and why.

We all have our own levels of independence; it is another aspect that gives us each our own individuality. Some of us feel more comfortable going out and doing things with a friend or a group of friends. Some would rather do everything solo. – No shaming any preference! You do you!! – But I encourage all women to push the boundaries and step outside of their comfort zone from time to time. Not only is it freeing to realize you have the capability to choose the company you keep, you get to realize the power of independence that you can possess is remarkable!

Personally, I have always been overly independent. I have always wanted to do things on my own with little or no help at all. Moving away from home will give you freedom and independence, no doubt. You realize just how much when you are completely on your own. This is where adult responsibilities like paying bills, cooking and cleaning become a routine.

When I first moved out, I was over two hours from home in an unfamiliar place with zero acquaintances. I had to get used to doing things on my own very quickly. I never really minded it but not having a choice in the matter until I made friends gave me a true sense of independence that I had never known before. This is when I began going shopping on my own, eating at restaurants on my own or going places on my own.

For me, it was a matter of wanting to experience new things and not miss out on opportunities just due to the fact that I was alone. Although I thrive off of social interaction, I thoroughly enjoy doing things on my own.

If doing things on your own is new to you, there’s a chance that it will be odd and a bit uncomfortable at first. It might take time to get used to, but I promise that the outcome will be rewarding.

I truly believe doing things independently will give you a sense of self identity and strength that you will be grateful to have. A stronger you will emerge, and you will be so proud of her! I hope all you ladies find that self and if you already have don’t ever let her disappear!
