Why Everyone Should Watch “The Sex Lives of College Girls”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Mindy Kaling has done it again folks. Having already been renewed for a second season less than a month after its original release, The Sex Lives of College Girls is a masterpiece that every modern-day girl in her 20s can appreciate and relate to. If you haven’t already watched the show, this is my spoiler-free review as to why I think The Sex Lives of College Girls deserves all of the hype that it has received.

First off, let’s talk about the characters that fill the screen in The Sex Lives of College Girls. Creators of the show Kaling and Justin Noble put a lot of effort into making these characters not just funny and witty, but relatable in every aspect of their lives. From the relationships amongst the four main characters, between them and their love interests, families and the side characters, the dynamics seen between them are so genuine and authentic that you would just assume that this is how every one of them is in real life. Each character was perfectly cast and embodies the unique quirks and characteristics that make each one of them so relatable to the watcher. I honestly cannot imagine anybody else playing these characters.

But it’s not just the relationships amongst the characters that make the show great, it is the experiences that they all go through, individually and together. Kaling and Noble have a way of tackling some major issues impacting young women not just in their college years, but throughout their entire lives, in a way that is relatable to viewers watching who are going through or have gone through similar experiences in their own lives. Though the show is mainly a comedy, when it comes down to serious issues, Kaling and Noble’s approach to tackling them is effective and flawless.

Another great element of the show is the iconic fashion statements that the characters make throughout it. Through the costumes, the main characters wear to the frat parties they attend, their evening attire, and just the outfits they wear to school are all modern, fresh, and perfectly represent the characters’ personalities. I don’t think I could ever pull off a sequin dress like these girls, but they all make them work in their ways.

And finally, if the above reasons weren’t enough to convince you to watch the show, here’s one final reason: every single individual who watches the show can relate to it in some way. It doesn’t matter who you are or what your age is, there are aspects of the show that anyone can relate to. Do you struggle to live up to expectations and want to make your parents proud? It’s in the show. Have different hopes or dreams from what your parents expect of you? It’s in the show. Did you ever struggle to fit in and find yourself being awkward in social situations? Don’t worry, because that’s in the show too. This show has something for everyone.

If you do decide to watch The Sex Lives of College Girls, you’ll laugh and cry but will also cringe at second-hand embarrassment on certain things that occur and gasp at shocking revelations. That’s what makes this a great TV show: the ability to keep the audience on their toes and always wanting and expecting more. The Sex Lives of College Girls should be your next binge-watch, and I hope I’ve done enough to convince you of such.
