Things Going on in Blacksburg This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Blacksburg is a great town, home to Virginia Tech and all of its proud Hokies. Although studies come first, it’s important to find balance for yourself so that you don’t burn out academically. That balance isn’t always staying in and doing a face mask with your favorite movie and popcorn; our college town has plenty to offer you in your spare time.

Squires hosts tons of events throughout the semester from movie nights to career and job fairs and even opportunities to find off-campus housing.

The Blacksburg Farmers Market takes place twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This is a great way to take a break from school or spend your Saturday morning with friends. Grab some pastries or fresh fruits and veggies while you’re there to make meals for the upcoming week — we love shopping and buying local! Hours may vary depending on the season.

Moss Arts Center hosts events ranging from plays to musical performances or guest speakers throughout the year. Students are able to attend these events at a discounted price of only $10.

Support your fellow student athletes by going to sporting events. Spring semester sports include men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and more. The Hokie Sports website has information on all other sports, schedules and tickets.

The Big Event is an annual event hosted by Virginia Tech that gives Hokies the opportunity to practice our motto, Ut Prosim, a Latin phrase that translates to “that I may serve.” The Big Event is a community-wide service project that allows you to help others by carrying out specific actions for others in your town.

Even if you aren’t 21 years-old, you can still have fun downtown with the wide variety of establishments that exist to provide entertainment. You have options like trivia night at 622 North, salsa dancing and live music events at the Milk Parlor, karaoke at TOTS or heading over to Champs and PK’s Bar and Grill.

You can find any of these events and others like it on Facebook or with a simple Google search. You are only in college once and the experience can only be lived while you’re here, so go and enjoy it!
