Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner, and the Misogynistic Media

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas have been married since May of 2019. The “Game of Thrones” star and “Jonas Brothers” frontman tied the knot in a Las Vegas wedding chapel, with an Elvis impersonator as the officiant. Ever since then, they became social media’s “it” couple, showcasing their relationship through their unique style, humorous TikToks, and more than tasteful middle fingers to the paparazzi on one of their many exotic vacations.

However, just after four years of marriage, the pair would head for romantic demise. Speculation of a rocky relationship began when photos of Turner and Jonas circulated of them without their wedding rings in late August this past summer. On September 1st, 2023, everyone’s nightmare came true, and Jonas officially filed for divorce. Just a few days after the announcement, the pair released a joint statement on Instagram stating, “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” They continue, “There are many speculative narratives as to why but truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

A supposed “credible” and “close” source to the couple told TMZ that the reason for the split is because of her alleged love for “partying.” “She likes to party, he likes to stay at home,” the source said. They also reported that Jonas takes care of their children “pretty much all the time” whilst on tour with his brothers. Another “insider” told Page Six that he did everything he could to “salvage” the relationship. “Divorce was a last resort for Joe. He never wanted to break up his family, but he had to take what he felt was the best course of action for his girls.”

Turner has yet to respond to these allegations, but social media users have come to her defense since the majority of mainstream publication coverage has the tendency to paint Jonas as the “martyr” in this situation. One Twitter user, @Reviewcentalk, says, “Misogyny is asking where Sophie Turner’s kids are every time she’s seen out without them while never asking where Joe Jonas’ kids are whenever he’s seen out without them. Misogyny is also getting mad when she’s seen out with her kids. Do ya’ll think she should be locked in a tower?”

Rolling Stone also commented on the situation saying “Watching a young woman [like Turner] be dragged through the mud for being a bad parent, simply for having the audacity to at least try to maintain a life of her own” is of concern. “It is deeply bothersome that in 2023, the media and, by extension, presumably Jonas’s team — made a calculated decision to capitalize on decades of right-wing-driven rhetoric bullying women who make a concerted effort to balance work with family, to behave as they are supposed to.”

All of this controversy initially sparked when photos were taken in early September, just after news of divorce circulated, pictures of Joe taking his daughters out to lunch were published. Not long after that, pictures and videos of Sophie going out on the town with a close friend, who also happens to be one of Joe’s ex-girlfriends, Taylor Swift, were also published. The picture almost paints itself. The media immediately hounded Turner, calling her “reckless,” “careless,” and a “bad mom,” to name a few terms. This surely is no surprise, as it is almost procedure for the media, social media, particularly, to take as little information as possible and run with it.

As this frenzy of rumors, paparazzi, misinformation, and baby-bait pictures play out, the reality of the situation is the ongoing custody battle after Turner sued Jonas for “wrongful retention” of their two daughters in late September. After an agreement for mediation, the couple is currently residing in New York City, where they will discuss how to move forward with custody and divorce decisions.
