How to stay awake in class

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

One of the hardest things for students to do besides going to class is staying awake. Everyone has been there: your eyelids start to get extremely heavy, your breathing gets shallower, and then your eyes just shut on their own. You can’t help it. Sometimes fighting back the sleepiness just doesn’t work. Here are some quick and easy tips that will help you stay awake in class.

 1. Get at least eight hours of sleep every night
2. Eat breakfast
3. Exercise in the morning
4. Sit at the front of the classroom
5. Engage in class discussions
6. Take lots of notes
7. Ask questions
8. Doodle
9. Chew gum or suck on mints
10. Sit up straight…NO slouching!
11. Make a to-do list
12. Drink things that have caffeine in them
13. Move as much as possible…tapping your foot and changing seat positions helps
14. Take a bathroom break to get your legs moving
15. Avoid all-nighters
