Ghosts, Pumpkins, and Horror Movies Oh My!

It’s spooky season! The best time of the year. The time of fall, browning leaves, pumpkin pie and pumpkin spice. I adore this season, and it houses a holiday that’s near and dear to my heart, Halloween! Halloween is the one night of the year where people can dress how they want, and they are given candy! The time of year where you carve pumpkins, scare people, and speaking of scaring people, my favorite Halloween tradition is watching horror movies. From the gore to the suspense, from murder mysteries to horror comedies, the world’s your oyster for horror movies. I find this time of year to be the best time to cozy up with a good horror movie …or a really badly made horror movie that’s good because of how funny it is. In this article I am going to highlight the horror movies that are gems in your repertoire. Horror movies that will make this spooky season have a kick to it! Here are the horror movies that you want to offer out when people want to watch a horror movie.

The Substance

A film about the iconic Elizabeth Sparkle, who was a star in the 80’s but as she gets older, she grows less and less relevant. So, she invests in a serum that advertises making a new and younger version of herself, but of course not everything is as it seems, or is it? You fall into a cycle of fame, and you have to ask yourself, what would you do to succeed? What are you willing to give up? This film blew me away as I found myself wanting Elizabeth Sparkle to have a happy ending and be able to celebrate her victories and battles. However, the ending will leave you not knowing what to expect. It’s a film that will keep you on your toes.

Final Destination!…Any of them

This franchise has the same premise with every movie, a big horrific accident happens and someone intervenes causing a domino effect of events to happen with death chasing the survivors and trying to fix back deaths list. It’s a film that’s going to have you on the edge of your seat. It’s a fun movie to watch with friends as you try to solve things but trust me, you won’t. It will make you see death in everything. The only horror movie that’s rooted in scary what ifs. For a girl with anxiety, this movie is my worst nightmare.

Bodies Bodies Bodies

A movie centered on a group of friends, the main character estranged from the group, during a hurricane party and a party that goes completely wrong. I loved it, sure it wasn’t a masterpiece but it made me laugh and I feel as though the characters are people I know in real life. It starts a bit slow but sets up for a good time. A fun thriller that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is horror but wrapped around Gen Z culture. It is a good watch with blood and suspense. Also, a horror movie with Pete Davidson? Color me impressed, intrigued, and slightly scared. Maybe Pete Davidson is the real horror in it.

Saw

This movie franchise has some duds but some amazing films. It is noted that the first is a cult classic. Everyone has to go through this movie series, its a canon event. The first Saw revolves around the Jigsaw Killer forcing two men to play a deadly game. Jigsaw does games that will mentally, emotionally, and physically break you. It’s a movie that is grounded in a simple premise but does more with what they had. The first movie, Saw, sets up the franchise for an amazing amount of success. It will have you gritting your teeth as you try not to cringe at the pain and games that occur.

The human Centipede

This movie and even this franchise is not for the faint of heart. The trauma bond you get as you watch this movie with your friends will be with you forever. If you get queasy easily this, Saw, and The Substance will destroy you. This movie makes me eerily uncomfortable, but it is a classic much like Saw. The first movie is all you need to see, don’t torture yourself with the others. It focuses on two tourists that get involved with a mad surgeon who wants to make the first Human Centipede. This movie moves slowly but oddly; I felt the hair stick up on my arm as I continued watching. It will make you grimace, but you can have a deep connection forged from it.

I hope that you enjoyed reading this and my spooky recommendations. Have a great spooky season and make sure to grab a friend and watch a movie!
