Don't Just Go Green on St. Patrick's Day

Thinking of going green and don’t know where to start? Well here are 5 easy ways you can be more eco-friendly that are sure to help you out. Besides, who only wants to be green on St. Patrick’s Day anyway?

1.Switch to a reusable water bottle

If you’re still buying cases of water every time you go to the store, stop! You could be saving yourself lots of time and money by simply investing in a reusable water bottle. It doesn’t even have to be an expensive one either. A small change like this can make a huge impact on the environment.

2. Eat less meat

I’m not telling you to go vegetarian, but having one more meal a day without meat can make a difference. Did you know that it takes 150 gallons of water to make just one hamburger? If you aren’t a huge meat eater then try cutting out meat from just a meal or two. Whether that be breakfast, lunch, or dinner, what’s most important is to do whatever is easiest for you!

3. Bike or bus

Biking to locations close by and taking the bus to class are excellent ways to be a little bit greener. With fewer vehicles out on the road, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced significantly. Although driving yourself can be a quicker solution, if you have the time, why not take the bus or bike? If those aren’t doable options for you, carpooling with friends is another great solution.

4. BYOB (Bring your own bag)

If you’re anything like me, you have a ton of Kroger bags, both paper and plastic, piled up in a random corner of your pantry. This pile made me realize that I don’t need to be using these bags every single time, and so I made the switch to a reusable grocery bag. You can practically find them anywhere, and they are super convenient to have around. And for the bags you already have, try to find another use for them before tossing.

5. Get involved!

At Virginia Tech alone there are multiple ways that you can get involved and help the environment. Whether it be participating by using the green to-go containers or joining a club that picks up litter along the Duck Pond, there is sure to be something for you!
