Ask Her Campus: Do Horoscopes Matter?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

If you have ever found yourself chalking up a blind date’s success or failure to the stars, wallowing in a mood because your horoscope indicated it or justifying your tenacity and stubbornness to the fact that you were born in a certain month, you may be someone who religiously reads and follows her horoscope. I will admit I have let my horoscope dictate too much of my fortunes for the day. If my daily horoscope predicted creativity would rule my chart, then I usually found some offbeat connection between my doodling in class with the “surge of creativity” my horoscope predicted. If my almost-relationship-but-we-never-defined-it fell through because he was an air sign and I was an earth sign, and obviously that’s a lot of room for miscommunication, then I felt more at ease to lean on astro-matching for future pairings then suffer the wound of a mismatch in emotional intelligence.

Maybe you are indifferent to horoscopes, thinking it ridiculous that the positions of the stars and gravitational pulls could make you think or behave in a particular manner. Regardless of your stance, astrology has it’s place in history. But does it have a say in your future? We asked our team their zodiac signs and if they think their signs match up with their personalities. The results tell us we have a lot of Leos on our team and that not many of us read our horoscopes too fervently… (Results are not conclusive, as we did not gather the entire team’s response.) Read on!

Question #1: What’s your sign?

Of the 23 team members who participated, the majority were Leos. A little crowd-sourcing on Leos reveal them to be passionate, cheerful, warm-hearted and brave. With the confident and regal lion as their spirit animal, we can say that it’s a pretty fierce sign to have. Next we have a tie between Geminis and Libras, both of which are air signs possessing intellect and reasoning as consistent traits.

Question #2: How often do you check your horoscope?

Most of our team checked their horoscopes a few times a week, with the second largest claiming to never check their horoscopes. Trailing in at third was the portion of the team who checked their horoscopes monthly.

Question #3: Do you think your sign matches your personality? Why or why not?

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

“Yeah, most things I’ve read are pretty accurate.”

-Lissandra Cartagena, Marketing and Publicity director, Class of 2019

 Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

“I believe my sign matches my personality to a degree. Sometimes I think Pisces are described as a lot more dramatic than I am! However, Pisces is a water sign, and I have always been drawn to the water. I swam competitively growing up and was always in the pool! Also, I grew up on the shoreline of Connecticut and am at the beach or on my boat almost every day in the summer. I find the water to be very calming and the beach has always been a place for me to reflect and gather my thoughts. Pisces are also always willing to help others and are very empathetic, and those are definitely traits that many of my friends say I have!”

-Bridget Bambrick, Street Team, Class of 2020

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

“Sometimes it matches but sometimes it is so far from true.”

-Chrissy Paschall, Writer, Class of 2020

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

“To a certain extent…I do believe that as a Gemini I have two distinct types of personalities, and I can notice when I am being sociable vs. restless, and I can be a bit indecisive at times.”

-Celia Byrne, Writer, Class of 2019

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

“Cancer’s are known for being homebodies and more nurturing of the signs, I definitely identify with these traits. I enjoy spending time with my family and helping others. Cancer’s are also tenacious and imaginative. I have always been fierce in achieving my goals and am a Creative Writing major, so I’d say that being a Cancer is definitely an accurate representation of my personality.”

-Jessica Mardian, Writer, Class of 2021

“My sign matches my personality in a lot of ways. Cancers are very sensitive and emotional, and I am. Cancers are also nurturing people with big hearts who are good at empathizing with others, and I also think that’s true of me. The difference is that cancers are shy and quiet, and I’m outgoing and loud. I’m a lot wilder than a typical cancer!”

-Bailey Black, Writer, Class of 2019

Leo (July 23-Aug.22)

Yes because I’m outgoing, independent, enjoy helping others and standing up for my friends but no because I don’t need to be the center of attention and have all eyes on me.”

-Jackie Graham, Street team, Class of 2021

“YES! 100% my sign matches my personality. There’s this one quote that explains it all, “She is a badass with good heart, soft but strong, unapologetic and honest. She is the type of woman you go to war beside not against.”

-Erica Sullivan, Content Creator, Class of 2020

“Mostly, but they are purposely general statements or qualities that people strive to be (hardworking, generous, confident, etc). So of course, I’m going to say yes those statements and focus on them and not pay much attention to the ones I don’t relate to. “

-Alexa, Marketing, Class of 2019

“Yes; I’m outgoing, stubborn and thoroughly enjoy shopping.”

-Camden Carpenter, Street team, Class of 2021

“Not really, since Leos are supposed to enjoy being in the center of attention, but I don’t.”

-Natalie Aldabbagh, Writer, Class of 2021

Virgo (Aug.23-Sept.22)

Sometimes the descriptions seem to really match my personality but other times it doesn’t.”

-Maggie Hwang, Street team, Class of 2021

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct.22)

“Pretty much exactly. I’m very balanced, and I love for everything to be perfect, and I’m always trying to make other people happy.”

-Ashleigh Griffin, Writer, Class of 2019

“I think it sort of matches my personality, I attempt to avoid conflict and be a peacekeeper in my everyday life.”

-Tessa Hawley, Writer, Class of 2021

“Sometimes, but I think horoscopes are pretty generalized so they can match everyone’s personality. Sometimes it’s really dead on though.”

-Megan, Street Team, Class of 2021

Scorpio (Oct.23-Nov.21)

“Not really, I don’t really believe in them so they seem random to me. Sometimes I think they are super relevant or not relevant at all!”

Anonymous Scorpio.

(Editor’s note: Scorpios are notoriously mysterious, so I am loving this anonymous entry.)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec.21)

“Yes. I am always looking for an adventure like my sign.”

-Bryli, Social Media, Class of 2018

 “Yes, I’m pretty chill.”

-Katie Lynn, Street Team, Class of 2021

“Sagg’s are described as adventurous, restless, spontaneous and free. I can totally relate because I am constantly trying to expand my experiences. In the past two years I’ve gone on a two week road trip down the east coast, bought plane tickets two days before flying across the country (twice), and planned adventures years in advance.”

-Marin Fujimoto, Social Media, Class of 2019

Capricorn (December 22-Jan.19)

“I have no idea what my sign says about my personality. I don’t put any stock in horoscopes.”

-Allie, Writer, Class of 2019

Question #4: Have you ever check your partner’s horoscope as an indicator of potential romantic compatibility?

Oddly enough, compatibility ranked as an important reason to rely on astrology within our team. It seems the concept of star-crossed lovers doesn’t have to be solely reserved for Shakespeare’s greatest works. (Romeo, Romeo, if you can hear me; I am still the ONLY single roommate in my apartment. Just FYI…)

There you have it. Whether or not you follow your horoscope or match up potential partners based on sign, it can be pretty interesting to explore.
