7 Workout Anthems by Black Women, for Black Women

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

Picture this: you’re ready to do your intense pilates workout. Maybe you’re a powerlifter about to take your pre-workout and creatine mix. Or maybe you’re more of a cardio girl getting ready to go to McComas to take one of their fabulous spin classes.

However, you cannot get in the mood for it. You’ve driven your gym playlist to the ground. You are absolutely exhausted of the same five songs repeating in your headphones that you might just lose it if you hear “City Girls” by Chris Brown again.

That song is actually good. This was probably a bad example, but you get the point.

I cannot count how many times I’ve run out of music at the gym. It’s painful. Every time it happens, I think about selling my newborn to Shrek. It’s almost as bad as when your headphones die right when you get to the gym. You end up having to listen to the warm and homey sounds of guys grunting when doing their sets and bad music set up by some 40-year-old man who thinks he knows what music everyone likes.

Yeah.

Anyways, because of this, I decided to give you eight hot, sexy, and amazing girly pop anthems—made by Black women hashtag Happy Black History Month—you can add to your gym playlist because I care about y’all. Someone give me a Nobel Prize.

“Bestfrenn” by gloss up (ft. glorilla)

Now let’s be real. Who doesn’t like a song about beating people up with your best friend?

Exactly.

This is what Gloss Up and Glorilla do in this song. It’s an absolute banger and it is always a great song to play at the start of a workout. I like to imagine I’m a delinquent popular girl best friend to the main character in a K-Drama that’s always beating men up for some reason. This song is what I like to call “Best Friend” by Saweetie and Doja Cat’s older sister who’s a hot criminal.

“Set The Tone” by Hitkidd (ft. Aleza, Gloss Up, Glorilla, Slimeroni, & K Carbon)

This is what I imagine the Ocean’s 8 theme song would be.

The synthesizer in the background of this song really sets it up for you. Do you ever want to be a maneater? This is the song for you. The flow between all of the girls in this song makes me want to be a rapper myself.

I can’t describe it. If you decide to not listen to any of these songs on this list, at least listen to this one.

“Eeny Meeny Miny Moe” by Gloss Up (ft. K Carbon, Aleza, Slimeroni)

Do you have men on your roster and don’t care about any of them? Do you annihilate their entire being when they say the stupidest comments to you? Are you a maneater? Well, do I have the perfect song for you?

Once again, Gloss Up has eaten and left no crumbs, bringing K Carbon, Aleza, and Slimeroni back on track. If you decided to listen to me about that last song, listen to this one too. They reappear on this track, giving a pseudo-part-two to “Set The Tone” by Hitkidd.

Eeny Meeny Miny Moe, which man will you hang out with tonight?

Just joking. Or am I?

“Gravity” by Day Sulan

Now compared to the other songs, this song is a little chiller than the others. Now, that’s not to say that you won’t be twerking to it—you will. It’s a song I like to warm up to. Like an appetizer.

You’ll find your head bobbing up and down while you listen to this song. Day Sulan’s voice is amazing too.

“Hottie” by Flo Milli (ft. Babyface Ray)

I love this song. Absolutely obsessed with it. Do you know what this song is good for? Cardio. If you’re doing a 12-3-3.2 and need a song to imagine that you’re a hot model strutting for New York Fashion Week, this is the song for you.

This song is just so, so girly. I can’t describe it, but the bells in the background with the beat also make me feel like a California teenager driving in the warm summer sun, getting ready to go surfing. Like yes Georgia, I wanna go surfing and drink boba on the beach and suntan.

My imagination is too active. Starting to think I need to get this checked.

“DPWM” by Gloss Up

Maybe I’m a Gloss Up fan. I don’t know. If you’re like me, you’re going to get so addicted to this.

I honestly didn’t realize how many songs I had from her on my playlist—which you should totally follow because I love shamelessly plugging my stuff.

No review here. Just listen to it.

“Twerk” by City Girls (ft. Cardi B)

Look. I know this one is a popular, mainstream, basic girl anthem, but I’m still going to turn up to this song.

Let’s say you’re on the last stretch of your workout. You’re tired—exhausted, even. When this song plays, you’re going to want to turn up not only to finish hard but to finish great. You’re telling me you’re not going to push hard with City Girls and Cardi B telling you twerk?

Let’s be realistic.

That’s my personal review. Let me know what you guys think of these songs since I know you all like to listen to me and missed me so much.

XOXO
