5 Reasons Why “Friendsgiving” Is An Underrated Holiday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

The TV show, Friends, introduced the world to a new holiday—Friendsgiving.  This fall, this potluck event celebrated with treasured friends—the family you found away from home—has become an increasingly common holiday for college students. Here are a few reasons why it has become one of the best holidays:

1.       It can be any day you want it to be.

Busy Thursday? Tuesday it is! Friendsgiving is the most flexible holiday, and you can bend it to as many friends’ schedules as possible to work around everyone’s classes, exams, meetings, and the million other commitments everyone has this time of year.

2.       It gives you a chance to try cooking something other than frozen TV dinners

Time to actually try one of those recipes that you add to your Pinterest board but never cook or to break out that one special dish that you bring to every single event that requires you to bring food. Just make sure to coordinate what food and drink everyone is bringing or you’ll end up with 10 different types of mac & cheese and only wine to drink. Though that actually may not be a bad thing after all.

3.       No Drama. No Stress.

While Thanksgiving can sometimes involve family drama and stress, Friendsgiving is a no fuss event!  There’s no need to bring out the fine china, because your friends don’t care about cutlery. While friendly bickering is still apart of Friendsgiving, at least you won’t be interrogated about your love life or post-graduation plans during the meal. (No Grandma, I’m not engaged. Yes, I do realize my biological clock is ticking. Thank you SO MUCH for reminding me.)

4.       It’s a great time to relax with your friends before you have to worry about finals

The end of Thanksgiving Break is the beginning of Finals Hell—the drowning in textbooks, Redbulls and misery. Friendsgiving is a good time to set aside all of the upcoming stress and just enjoy each other’s company before you isolate yourself in a corner of the library.

5.       It reminds you that you are an actual adult!

“Adulting”’ usually brings bills, responsibilities and other unpleasantness to mind. However, there are few things more “adult” than a semi-civilized dinner party! Parties that aren’t in a fraternity’s basement with strobe lights and only Natty Light (with real food and actual conversation) are a good reminder of some of the positive aspects that adulting has to offer!

Any gathering with friends and food is sure to be fun! After dinner, maybe put on a Christmas movie or play a game. Just have one night where you focus on how thankful you are for the friends in your life.
