“My childhood, now looking back at it, was a bit different than everyone else’s. A lot of buildings while I was growing up got bombed. So apparently that’s not a normal thing to go through. Or like tanks to be right outside of your house. Or when you’re walking around and just having a tank turn around and point at you, you would have to raise your hands up and start walking away. That would happen all the time during the second Intifada. They started having curfews; no one could get out of their house for food or anything, but the neighbor’s kids and myself would always meet up in the church and play. My mom would always make sure I knew what to do if anything goes wrong, but then one of my friends got shot in the leg and then it wasn’t okay to go out and play. I was a kid; I didn’t know it was something to be scared of. As a kid all you do is play, have a lot of family time, and play a lot of board games. I never saw the tanks as a bad thing, they wouldn’t scare me, they were just there. You know how kids pick up flowers here? Well back in Palestine, as kids, we used to pick up bullets from our garden, clean them, and make necklaces from them. It was a very normal thing for me. My parents made it seem so normal and I never understood that. I realized it wasn’t normal when I came to the United States. I was blown away that I could just walk casually, and I could go to any other city freely. The illegal settlements on Palestinian land restricts us back home, the settlements come with guards and roadblocks. I really remember the night raids, at 3am, they would come during the Intifada. Since we didn’t have an army, the people would be the ones fighting and a lot were young men. Any man they found over 16, they would take him away and imprison and torture them. They would always raid my grandma’s house less than ours, so my brother and I had to sleep at my grandma’s for a long time. I just remember that every time they came I would be so scared for my brother and they would ask questions like, ‘Who’s this game for? Who’s this basketball hoop for?’ and I would always say it’s mine to protect my brother.” “How do you feel now, going back?” “It’s…” #HOVT
