What Being in a Sorority Has Taught Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Villanova chapter.

Being in a sorority is a perfect example of that old cliché: From the outside looking in you can never understand it. From the inside looking out you can never explain it. Before January 2016, I never had a sister. But now I’ve got 160 sisters who offer more love, inspiration, and excitement than one girl could handle.

1. To never judge a book by its cover.

Joining a sorority made me realize how many girls I would have missed out on getting close to because of our varying friend groups, majors, and interests. In fact, there are some girls I never thought I could be friends with. Being in a sorority has allowed me to find incredible and invaluable friendships in the most unlikely girls.

2. You are never alone.

Whether it is your best friend in your sorority or a girl you have never spoken a word to, sisters help other sisters. This goes for everything and anything from advice about classes, offering a shoulder to cry on, or even just needing a ride to Target.

3. Diversity is a beautiful thing.

Each sister has their own passions and interests that they are so eager and willing to share with others. Whether it is playing on a sports team, singing in A Capella, or participating in community service, each sister has a special talent to offer to the sorority. It is just as wonderful to find someone who shares your passions as it is to learn about something new.

4. Time management is key.

There are so many amazing things about being a part of Greek life: functions, philanthropy events, and sisterhood bonding. However, it can be super hard to balance participating in all these activities while balancing schoolwork, other friends, and extracurriculars. Being in a sorority has taught me how to master the art of time management and prioritizing.

5. Small compliments can go a long way.

You never know how much telling someone, “I’m so glad we met,” or “You’re hair looks great today,” can give them the boost of confidence they need to get through the day. Being in a sorority has taught me how crucial it is to lift people up, instead of breaking them down.

To my sisters, thank you for the memories, laughs, and for allowing me to by myself!
