What’s New On Campus This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

One of the most exciting things about coming back to campus each year is seeing what’s changed since the year before. Whether it’s new furniture in the Student Commons or a rearrangement of Shafer, changes mark the beginning of a new school year. But a lot of times, some of these changes can be confusing, or you just plain didn’t know about them. We put together a list of some changes on campus this year to make the start of your fall semester even smoother.

Cabell Library

Unless you’re new to campus, you’re probably already very aware of the construction on the library. Although some of the blocked entrances and loud noises pose an inconvenience to some, the finished product will pose many more conveniences to all. The expansion plan includes much more studying space, huge windows to allow in more natural light and even a giant screen for watching games, concerts and cool art displays. It’s slated to open in 2015. Read more about the library’s new features on VCU’s website.

Harrison & Grace/Broad & Ryland

You may have noticed construction by the 500 Academic Centre on Harrison St. That’s because VCU is building two new upperclassman dorms here! The two five-story buildings are going to be called Harrison & Grace and Broad & Ryland. They are also predicted to open in 2015.

Institute for Contemporary Art

You’ve seen the sign in the parking lot on Belvidere and Broad for months now. Construction on the architecturally beautiful building has finally begun! Also expected to open in 2015, the building will host art exhibits, classrooms, an auditorium and special events.

Walmart on Campus

VCU just recently announced plans to put a Walmart on Campus on the first floor of a future classroom/office tower at 912 W. Grace St. The announcement caused a lot of controversy among students and local residents who do not want the corporation on VCU’s campus. However, many aspects of the addition are misunderstood. Walmart on Campus is a pilot program underneath Walmart and VCU’s location will be their fifth store. The space is 4,100 square-feet and will have 10 employees. The store will sell many essentials and even has a pharmacy. It’s expected to open late 2014 or early 2015.

The Siegel Center

Also known to many as “The Stu,” this facility is home to VCU’s volleyball and basketball teams. As if games weren’t already exciting enough, the school is renovating parts of the building. Updates include two new “luxury” viewing areas, a new sound system, ribbon board and center-hung scoreboard!
