Something I look forward to each year is seeing new movies that are coming out—especially during popular premiere times like the summer or during the winter holidays. However, due to COVID-19, the release of many popular films have been postponed or moved to a completely different platform.

“Mulan”

Disney’s live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated film, “Mulan,” has been highly anticipated with the number of remakes Disney has been releasing over the last few years. Although the making of this adaptation sparked controversy when accusations were made of whitewashing the cast, this issue was resolved when the directors searched for Chinese actors to represent the characters, giving us a win for diversity. Although the film was originally scheduled to premiere in March, it ultimately got postponed due to the pandemic. After being delayed multiple times, Disney changed strategies altogether and opted to premiere the movie on Sep. 4 on their own streaming app, Disney+.

“Black Widow”

The upcoming Marvel film “Black Widow” is something I’ve been waiting years for. It follows the character Natasha Romanoff and is set after the events of “Captain America: Civil War.” Scarlett Johansson is obviously starring as the main character, but the cast has some other notable actors too, such as David Harbour from “Stranger Things” and breakout star Florence Pugh from “Little Women” and “Midsommar.” The movie was supposed to come out last May, but it has been postponed until May of 2021.

“The Forever Purge”

As someone who is a big fan of The Purge franchise, I was super excited when I heard about this upcoming film. “The Forever Purge” is the fifth and final addition to the set of movies, in which the plot revolves around a 12-hour window where all crime in America is legal. If you get scared easily, these movies may not be for you since they are classified as horror. Due to the pandemic, the movie was not released as scheduled in July, and it has been rescheduled to premiere in the summer of 2021.

“A Quiet Place Part II”

After the box-office success of  “A Quiet Place,” starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, another movie was bound to be created. The awaited sequel, “A Quiet Place Part II” follows the events of the first movie as the Abbott family continues to fight for survival from the mysterious creatures that hunt by sound. Initially, Paramount planned to release the film in late March, however, since it has been postponed twice and now is set to be released in April 2021.

“Wonder Woman 1984”

“Wonder Woman 1984” is the sequel to the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film starring Gal Gadot based on the DC Comics character. As can be inferred from the title, the story is set in 1984 during the Cold War and follows Wonder Woman as she battles against villains Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah. The movie is currently scheduled to be released on Dec. 25, 2020.

Although I’ve been waiting to see some of these films in the theatre, it’s understandable why the premieres had to be canceled and moved to later dates. With all major activities being majorly postponed during this crazy time we’re living in, at least we can hold on to our excitement and look forward to 2021 being a big year for movies.
