Tell me a little about your organization, the hip-hop student collective at VCU:
We were originally the student hip-hop organization. We spread to 10 other campuses and became one of the most prominent. We rebranded for more autonomy and became the hip-hop student collective at VCU. We look to bolster the local hip-hop community through events that range from house shows to working with Strange Matter and The Broadberry.
What sparked your interest in hip-hop?
It was probably seventh grade through watching MTV, Rap City and 106 & Park. The boom of the internet boosted the value of pop culture and as a black male who ascribes to his culture, I quickly realized the amount of influence African Americans have on pop culture.Â
What is most important to you?
The goal is to get Richmond the recognition it deserves for its hip-hop scene.
What is the recognition that you feel Richmond deserves?
I would love for Richmond to be respected as one of the epicenters for birthing great hip-hop acts. Just like how Chicago, New York, L.A. and St. Louis have been before.
