Using Tarot Cards to Meddle in Your Friend’s Love Lives

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

There’s always been an air of mystery to the art of tarot card reading. It’s a complicated practice rooted deeply to the interpretation of the meaning behind a set of cards, and it can be used to gain an understanding of an individual’s specific circumstances. However, there’s definitely a large amount of knowledge that is required to do readings that contain any sort of accuracy. Tarot also has an air of sophistication and superstition surrounding it that makes it a little intimidating for newcomers to dip their toes into the practice, even as a hobby.

Tarot always seems so official, with expensive readings being done by practiced card readers and with thick guidebooks explaining the meaning and symbolism behind the specific sets of cards that one uses. However, tarot doesn’t necessarily have to be so complex.

I, personally, do tarot card readings in my spare time whenever the desire hits me. I mostly use the cards for my friends and their issues, as it’s more difficult for me to interpret the meaning of the cards whenever I try to pull for myself. However, the readings I’ve done for my friends have opened an entirely new world of possibilities for me.

I’ll admit it! I will—I’m a snoop. I like to gossip. I enjoy hearing about my friend’s love lives and offering advice when I can, but mostly I’m there for the drama. It’s a bad trait of mine, but I manage to balance it out with genuine concern and care for my friends when they come to me about situations in their life.

Admitting that I’ve used the tarot cards to take a peek into my friend’s love lives is a little silly, but I have done it. Only when they ask me to, though! It feels fairly immoral to do readings when they’re unaware of it.

To potential newcomers who are wondering whether or not to take the plunge into card reading and are wary about the complex tangle of information surrounding card reading in general, this may be the ease into card reading that you’re looking for. Most everyone can relate to wanting to help their friends out with various relationship issues, and tarot is a unique enough method that people tend to be amused when someone offers to do a reading for them.

Besides, it’s enough of an incentive to be excited to memorize the meanings of the various cards.

My favorite thing to do readings on is romance in general. Now, initially, I was skeptical of the effectiveness of the cards and their interpretations of events. It seemed so crazy, at first! But then, after doing a few readings for friends and seeing a bit of real-life accuracy in the cards that I pulled for them, I was hooked.

The most intense reading I’ve ever done for a friend was when I had read her cards to see how her future love life would potentially look, and I managed to pull the Tower card of all things! Now, to those unaware of the meaning behind the Tower card (which is basically everyone, if I’m being frank), it essentially spells out disaster and crisis in the most blatant way possible. It is, without a doubt, one of the worst cards to pull.

My friend was shocked when I told her, and I was just surprised on her behalf.

She essentially waved it off, though, which I had expected. However, I do love knowing about how my friend’s lives are going and quietly kept track just in case things went sour. I don’t like seeing my friends having to deal with bad situations, and when she and her significant other ended up having an explosive break up a while later, I was shocked.

I, of course, offered my support and was there for her to speak with if she ever wanted to. But the old card reading was always in the back of my mind like I should have paid more attention to it than I had.

That’s just the most blatant example of card pullings becoming true. Most of the time, it’s far more subtle. But, for newcomers who are interested in tarot in general, doing relationship-based pulls may be the perfect way to get your feet wet!

It’s interesting enough to get hooked on, and when you have a specific topic to circle the meaning of the cards towards, it becomes easier to interpret!
