Unpopular Opinion: Thanksgiving is the Worst Holiday Ever.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

I’m going to be honest with you, Thanksgiving is one of my least favorite holidays and is possibly the worst holiday ever. There I said it. I apologize if the truth hurts. There are many reasons as to why I greatly dislike this holiday, and since you clicked on this article obviously you would like to know why.

First, I’m going to say that I am a Christmas fanatic, which may be a reason why I dislike Thanksgiving so much. I don’t like it stealing the spotlight from Christmas. Also, if Thanksgiving wants to live up to the (rightfully given) hype around Christmas, then it needs more activities. I mean, Christmas has it beat with ice skating, caroling, decorating your house with lights and the craze of Christmas shopping. Some can say that fall activities like going pumpkin picking or apple picking can be classified as Thanksgiving activities, but it still doesn’t compare to Christmas.

The other bone I have to pick with Thanksgiving is the lack of alternative food options. Growing up my Thanksgiving consisted of bread rolls and mashed potatoes. Who would look forward to a holiday when the only activity was to eat and the options weren’t even good? Have other options for those who don’t eat turkey, stuffing or green beans. Also, after the stress of making dinner and the monotonous activity of eating it, who looks forward to clean the whole mess up and then pretending to watch a football game with your family. There’s no excitement, the whole activity is so boring. All you do is eat and then what?

There are no other activities after that, other than going Black Friday shopping. Which is the thing I like most about Thanksgiving. I just enjoy the chaos and stress after being bored by my relatives. I like the adrenaline rush of having good deals on things, plus you can buy Christmas gifts for your family and friends. Besides Black Friday shopping, The Macy’s Day Parade is the only thing I like about Thanksgiving, although I would rather be at the parade than watching it through a TV and listening to what the commentators have to say about the parade.

Let’s be honest here, Thanksgiving is just the Wednesday of holidays and the only reason you want the holiday to get here is because it’s just a stepping stone for Christmas. It’s the buffer between spooky season and the magical winter wonderland that is Christmas. I guess you couldn’t have those holidays too close together because it would probably destroy the universe or something. If you say your favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, then I know who you truly are and I am not impressed.
