Having a dining plan is nice. Although we pay for dining plans, we aren’t forking up money for our meals on the spot so it almost seems like free food. This makes it easy for us to eat, but it’s not always easy to decide where to eat. Now, we have to admit that VCU has done a good job of providing us options – all-you-can-eat at Shafer, the addictive chicken strips at Raising Cane’s, and made-to-order sandwiches at Cary St. Deli are only to name a few. However, these options can get old, and they get old fast. Do you ever find yourself in between classes thinking, “I could really go for something different but I don’t have time (or feel like) going off campus…”? Well collegiettes, you don’t have to leave campus to find different food options! There are plenty of tasty alternatives right here on campus who would love to serve you!
Alchemy Coffee (Grove & Linden, between the compass and the performing arts buildings)
Skip your daily dose of Starbucks and stop by here instead! The cart’s owner, Eric Spivack (he follows us!), specializes in unique, single-origin drip coffees which means the coffee beans come from one farm rather than being a “blend” of coffee beans from multiple places. Unlike many coffees, this stuff is not bitter when drank black – it’s actually incredibly smooth! He also sells a few select pastries from Flour Garden Bakery.
Goatocado (Floyd Avenue between Cabell Library and Harris Hall)
If you’re coming from across the way and still need your coffee fix, try out these guys! They brew Lamplighter Coffee which is fair-trade, organic, and best of all – locally roasted. They also serve vegetarian breakfast and lunch items and tea that is also fair-trade and organic. In an effort to be eco-conscious, the wrappers and cups are biodegradable. “We just try to keep it as simple and nutritional as possible,” said Michael Eldred, one of the Goatocado employees. And if you come on the right day, you might spot his sweet furry friend, Bernie. (Show the pup some lovin’!)
Olio (Grove & Linden, between the compass and the performing arts buildings)
Need a tasty sandwich and Shafer just isn’t cutting it? Try a gourmet sandwich from here! A smiling employee, Ross Garrison, was happy to assist me and told me that the cart is an offspring of the main restaurant which is located at 600 E. Main Street. Soups, pastas and side dishes are served alongside the sandwiches.
Famous Gyro (Floyd Avenue between the Commons and Cabell Library)
If you’ve never tried gyro, this is the place to try it. Or if you just like gyro, this is still the place to go! Sher and Khalil Ahmad, fun-loving brothers, started the business themselves and specialize in gyro dishes, but have other options as well. “Where else can you find a cheesesteak for $5?” said Tyler Lloyd, VCU student.
Al Madina (Grove & Linden, between the compass and the performing arts buildings)
“Everything is good and fresh,” said Fouad Elabbasi, the cart’s charming owner and operator (and he’s right!). He serves Middle Eastern, Egyptian food. He says the most popular item is the chicken kebab which comes with rice, tomatoes, lettuce, and ranch dressing, but he also serves other dishes, including vegetarian alternatives.
Mobile Munchies (W. Main Street between the Commons and Oliver Hall)
You can’t miss “J and K’s” tropical themed cart that’s most likely blasting some reggae tunes. This friendly couple is happy to serve you fresh fulfillment whether you’re hungry or thirsty. They have owned and operated the cart for eighteen years now and continue to serve fresh vegetarian and vegan food as well as selections for the meat-eaters. There is also an extensive list of made-to-order drinks to choose from.
Paris Creperie (W. Main Street between the Commons and the Temple Building)
Once you’ve had your coffee and lunch, swing by here for a unique dessert. If you can’t spot it, your nose will surely lead the way. You can smell the sweetness from down the street and the service will not disappoint. Their specialty is crepes with Nutella and a selection of fresh fruit. “Only crepes – savory and sweet crepes,” said Adam Hafiane, one of the cart’s owners.
Put a little variety in your day and try out these unique options!
