Spring Into Life: 5 Spring-Inspired DIY Projects for Your Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

It’s that time of year, collegiettes! Spring is in the air, and inspiration is at an all-time high. Spring cleaning may not be our favorite thing to do, but while we’re at it why not create something super cute and unique to spruce up your space. These DIY projects are super simple and guaranteed to catch the eyes of all your friends.

Chic Cords

Okay, so we all know how unsightly tangled wires can be.  But just with some washi tape and creativity, you can have a decorative cord in under 15 minutes! All you need is washi tape, scissors, and a wire. Cut pieces of tape 1.5 inches long, wrap the tape pieces around the cord and create whatever pattern you want. It’s as simple as that! Decorative Jars

As college students, we can all be a bit more organized. These jars will help you take a step in the right direction. Whether its makeup brushes, pens and pencils, or even Q-Tips and cotton balls, this project will have you organized in no time. You will need a mason jar, patterned fabric, craft glue, a small cup (to hold glue), scissors and a paint brush.  Pour some glue into your small cup for easy paint brush access. Cut your fabric into strips relative to the size of your jar. Use the paint brush to spread the glue evenly along one side of one strip of fabric, and line the inside of the jar with the strips. Continue this step until the inside of the jar is completely covered, and then let dry. WARNING: Only use battery operated candles if you plan to use the jar as a candle holder. Jar not suited for real candles. Photo cred: fellowfellow.com

Mini Gardening Pots

When you think of spring, you think of flowers. And if you’re a gardening enthusiast but live in a dorm or an apartment, you’ll love this project. You’ll need ceramic pots (size of pot depends on what type of plant you plan to grow, just make sure whatever it is it has room for its roots to grow), ceramic marker, oven, soil and seeds. Make sure your pot is clean before drawing on it. You don’t necessarily have to draw these cute little faces on your pot, let your imagination run free with this. Use your ceramic marker to decorate the pot however you want, and then set the design using the oven according to the instructions on your marker. Let the pot cool and then begin planting, following the instructions on the seed packet. In a couple days you’ll see your garden begin to bloom. Photo cred: bywilma.com

Lemon Sugar Scrub

Fresh, natural scents are another upside to spring. This super simple scrub is the easiest way to incorporate those scents into your skincare regiment. You will need a glass mason jar (plastic jars will not hold up well to the oils), a ½ cup of coconut oil, 1 cup of white sugar and 10 drops of lemon essential oils. Simply mix the ingredients together and you’re done! You can even decorate your jar with some more of that washi tape from the Chic Cords project. Photo cred: krystalskitsch.com

Floral/Button Push Pins

If you use a cork board to stay organized, this project is for you. This just might be the easiest project on this list. You’ll need push pins, embroidered flowers and/or buttons and a hot glue gun.  Simply glue your flowers and buttons onto a push pin, and let dry. That’s it! So easy, and so cute!
