VCU’s Starbucks is one to appraise. Not only does it save our lives by sustaining our all-nighters,
late nights studying, and tiresome runs from class to class, but our Starbucks is also ranked third as Aramark’s most successful Starbucks — beaten only by the University of Rochester and New York Univeristy.
Compared to other Starbucks in the state, VCU is also within the top 10 most successful. To get a closer look at Starbucks and why it is in such high demand at VCU, I interviewed one of the employees, Drew Reid, who shared his inside perspective about working for our very busy coffee-spot.
What kind of stereotypical student do you usually see here?
VCU is a very unique environment and this doesn’t change with our customers. They are just as diverse as our student body, so I wouldn’t say there’s any type of “stereotypical” student.Â
What is your favorite part about this job?
Making all the different drinks we have to offer here at Starbucks as well as seeing people’s faces when they take their first sip.
Do you often see “regulars” during your shifts?Â
Yes, every day I see familiar faces! It’s even better to get to know someone name by name.Â
Currently, what would you say is the most popular drink?
The pumpkin spice latte is the most popular right now, but once caramel brulee comes back onto our menu for the holidays, then my guess is it will be sold just as much.
What drink is almost never ordered?
The marble mocha macciato is almost never ordered because a lot of people don’t even know it exists. It is like a caramel macciato, but instead of a shot of vanilla, we add a shot of white mocha.
Why do you think VCU’s starbucks is ranked in the top 5 in sales nationwide through Aramark’s services?
We have more efficient method of getting people through the lines. Â It seems to really work to our benefit. Also, the library is right in the center of Monroe campus and we accept rambucks and dining dollars — this is convienient for VCU students. Of course, the people who work here are awesome which keeps people coming back too!
