If you ever find yourself having a few hours to spare on a nice day (and a bike to ride), do not hesitate to explore the many sites of Richmond. It is too easy to take for granted what the historic city has to offer. Here are a few places that definitely need to be seen if you have the time.
1. Maymont Park
When I first discovered Maymont, I had to convince myself that I wasn’t dreaming. Everything is so serene — the trees, the animals, the breeze that blows over the land. There are so many places to sit and admire what’s around you that you’ll never want to leave.
2. Downtown Richmond
If you’re looking for a small taste of city life, then downtown is the right place to go. It has the perfect balance of restaurants and storefronts, all while still maintaining a calm atmosphere.
3. Carytown
There are so many places to go in Carytown, and if you’re riding your bike there, chances are you’ll see many other people on bikes, too. Carytown has a wide variety of food, clothing and jewelry shops and other fun activities. The colorful aesthetic of the area is a definite plus as well.
4. Church Hill/Richmond Hill
This area is just outside of the downtown region. Its quaint and scenic views are perfect for anyone who enjoys being one with nature. It is also an ideal place to sketch or listen to music. The sky is the limit.
5. Belle Isle
Grab some friends and head down to the water! Belle Isle is always buzzing with life and positive energy. The sound of the rapids against the rocks create a natural soundtrack for a day of relaxation.
6. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
One of the best things about the VMFA is that it’s free and open to the public, all day and every day. So, if you really wanted to, you could go anytime. There are so many works of art from so many time periods that it’s almost hard to see it all in one day, which makes it all the more exciting!
All of these locations are located within Richmond, and close to VCU. Make the most out of your day by paying a visit to one of these breathtaking sights!
